Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Catholic steals lead late to edge women's basketball

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team got off to a good start, fell behind in the middle quarters, but came back to take the lead in the fourth quarter. Catholic hit a late three to take the lead and held on to narrowly edge the Blue Jays, 59-56. Lydia Lawson led E-town with a team-high 12 points.

Lawson had the opening basket of the game, though Elizabethtown (7-6, 1-2 Landmark) trailed for most of the first quarter. That was until the Jays went on a 9-0 run to jump ahead 20-14 over Catholic (11-3, 2-1 Landmark).

Mikayla Ruth kicked off the spurt with a good jumper at the 3:38 mark of the first quarter. Emma Hoesman found the sophomore for the bucket. The following offensive possession, Veronica Christ drained a three and gave the Jays the lead, 16-14.

Ruth and Lawson hit the next two baskets for E-town to build a six-point lead with 1:18 left in the first.

Elizabethtown had just one point through the first 5:01 of the second quarter, which allowed the Cardinals to retake the lead. A possession after they did, Lawson hit from beyond the arc to tie it up at 24-24. The lead didn't last long, though, as Sam Cowan gave her team the lead once again.

Briana Bull, who tied for a game-high with 12 points, sent Catholic into halftime with a layup with ten seconds left in the half. CUA piled on 20 points in the paint in the first half and shot 13-for-27 from the field (48.1%).

The Cardinals held E-town to single digits in the third quarter. Ashley Reynolds had the Jays' first bucket of the quarter, but Elizabethtown did not score again until the 2:52 mark of the third on a made free throw from Christ. Reynolds hit a pair from the line to close out the quarter and Catholic had an eight-point lead going into the final period.

Lawson's and-one started off the fourth for E-town. Christ created a steal opportunity and went the other way for two and the quick 5-0 run had Elizabethtown within three, 41-38.

Emma Hoesman hit a pair of foul shots and Abby Beyer drained a trey to cap off a 10-0 run for the Blue Jays that restored the lead to the visitors, 43-41, though briefly.

Cowan knocked down a three of her own and both teams wrestled back and forth for the lead over the next few minutes. Neither side could build even a two-possession lead until Bull hit a three with 2:59 left.

Reynolds and Christ each hit two free throws that tied the game up at 52-52 with a little over two minutes remaining in regulation.

As she did earlier, Cowan gave the lead back to Catholic with another three. Her layup 15 seconds after extended the lead to five, 57-52, with 45 ticks on the clock. That bucket came out of timeout for the Cardinals.

A missed three at E-town's end wound up in the hands of Beyer, who grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled that sent the junior to the line. She hit her foul shots and it was a three-point game with 24 second left.

The Jays fouled on Catholic's next possession and sent them to the line. After a split, Ruth's layup made it a two-point game with only five seconds to go.

An immediate foul by EC put Catholic in the same position, with a chance to ice the game, but again it was another split and E-town had a chance at the buzzer. The shot did not go and CUA held on for a three-point, 59-56, win.

Lawson's 12 points were a team-high. Reynolds posted 11 points and Ruth added ten for the Blue Jays. Hoesman had six rebounds and four assists, both tops on the team.

Bull and Payton Smith both recorded 12 for the Catholic.

Elizabethtown will host Susquehanna on Saturday, January 13, at 4 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium.
