Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jays' defense locks down Susquehanna to snap three-game skid

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team was locked in defensively and held Susquehanna to 37 points over 40 minutes in a 50-37 win to help E-town snap a three-game winless streak. Abby Beyer led the Blue Jays with a team-high 15 points.

It was a 2-2 game for over five minutes of the first quarter as both teams tried to get things going offensively. Susquehanna (6-8, 1-3 Landmark) grabbed the lead twice, but Beyer's first of four treys in the game put Elizabethtown (8-6, 2-2 Landmark) in the lead, 6-4, with 1:45 left in the first.

Tess Nichols tied the game very late in the quarter with a layup. Beyer sank a jumper on the final possession of the first and sent E-town into the second up 8-6.

The second quarter is where the Blue Jays pulled ahead of the River Hawks, though Susquehanna started on a quick 4-0 run to grab back the lead.

Lydia Lawson started a 10-0 spurt for the Jays with a pair of free throws tied it back up, at 10-10. Emma Powell and Beyer combined for the other eight points of the run. Beyer capped it off with a four-point play. That came after back-to-back made baskets by Powell, who finished with 10 points.

Bailey Trell made it a five-point game with 2:03 remaining in the half, though the Blue Jays scored the final seven points of the quarter to take a double-digit lead into halftime.

Veronica Christ knocked down a three, Emma Hoesman found Powell down low for a layup and Hoesman hit a jumper of her own with 24 ticks left.

Elizabethtown finished with a 28-10 advantage in bench points, led by Beyer's 15 and 10 from Powell. EC also held the River Hawks to just 5-for-28 shooting in the first half (17.9%).

Both teams scored 16 points in the third quarter as the Jays maintained their 12-point lead after 30 minutes. Despite only nine fourth-quarter points from E-town, the defense only allowed eight points for Susquehanna.

Beyer led Elizabethtown in both halves in scoring. Ashley Reynolds had five points and seven rebounds alone in the second half.

Susquehanna's 14 field goals were the fewest the Blue Jays have allowed this season and the River Hawks' shooting percentage of 25.9 percent was also the lowest Elizabethtown has allowed through 14 games.

Courtney Adams led the visitors with 15 points and Megan McFadden had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Elizabethtown hosts Drew on Wednesday, January 17, at 7 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium.
