Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

E-town offense too much to bear for Rangers

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had the shots falling Wednesday night in a big Landmark Conference with Drew at Thompson Gymnasium. E-town shot over 50 percent in the first half and carried that momentum through the second half to dominate the Rangers, 75-52. Ashley Reynolds led the Blue Jays in scoring with 17 points.

One thing that makes Elizabethtown tough to matchup with on offense is the depth of scoring. Only once this season has a player led the team in scoring two straight games (Mikayla Ruth). Five different players have been the top scorer for the Blue Jays this season. After Abby Beyer paced E-town with 15 points on Saturday, tonight's win was led by Reynolds.

The lead went back and forth through the first three minutes until Emma Hoesman drained a jumper from the outside to give Elizabethtown (9-6, 3-2 Landmark) a one-point lead, 6-5. It was from that point that Drew would not lead for the rest of the game after having spent only 41 seconds with it.

Moe Davis Campbell provided a tough test down low. Her layup made it 8-7 after Veronica Christ had knocked down a jumper on the previous possession. It was the final time Drew (11-5, 3-2 Landmark) got that close. E-town went on a 14-5 run to close out the quarter and take a 22-12 lead into the second. Half of Christ's point total (12) came in the opening quarter to help get the Jays out in front.

Elizabethtown started off the second quarter on an 11-0 run and held the Rangers scoreless through the first 4:35 as they built a 21-point lead after Marissa Emlet dished down low to Emma Powell for a layup.

Seven different players contributed to the Jays' 21-point second quarter as they outscored Drew 21-10. On her own, Hoesman nearly matched the Rangers' quarter output. Hoesman had seven in the second and nine in the first half to tie for the team-lead in points. Christ also had nine at the half and E-town took a 43-22 lead into the intermission.

Drew went back inside to Davis Campbell and Erin Frederick to start the second half and the pair helped get the Rangers back into the game. The forwards combined for nine points in the quarter and 80 percent shooting down on the block. Hailey Stine, averaging over 11 points per game, scored all eight of her points in the third quarter. Michaela Keegan, who went off for 36 points last Wednesday at Moravian, was held scoreless in the first half, but knocked down her first points of the game in the third quarter. It was her jumper that cut the deficit to 12, 51-39, after E-town had been up by as many as 21 earlier in the quarter.

Needing a spark offensively to reset the momentum, Beyer drilled a three from the right wing. Christ had the ball in the left corner with the passing lane to Beyer unimpeded. In one motion, Beyer caught the ball and went up for the trey and hit it. A little over a minute later, she knocked down her second of the quarter to push the lead back to 17 with 2:00 left in the third. She ended the quarter with a third trey in response to Stine's three-point make. E-town's lead was back to 17 by the end of the quarter.

Powell, Christ, and Reynolds accounted for 10 of Elizabethtown's first 12 points of the fourth quarter and helped extend the Blue Jays' lead to 27 after Powell sank a pair of free throws. She finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line.

Drew, down by as many as 30, scored the final seven points of the game late in the fourth to battle back within 23 by the time the clock expired.

E-town had 17 assists on 28 made field goals and nine different players with points to their name. Reynolds' 17 tied for a game-high with Davis Campbell. Christ added 12 and Beyer recorded 11 off the bench. Reynolds had a game-high eight boards and four steals. Davis Campbell and Frederick were a combined 14-for-18, while the rest of the Rangers shot 7-for-34.

Elizabethtown will travel to face Goucher on Saturday, January 20, at 4 p.m.
