Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ruth, Emlet net career highs in road win at Drew

MADISON, N.J. -- Beating a Landmark Conference opponent can be tough enough, but sweeping the opposition with the second game on the road is even tougher. That's what the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team did Wednesday night at Drew as Mikayla Ruth and Marissa Emlet both reached new career highs in points to help E-town beat the Rangers, 73-68.

Drew (12-8, 4-5 Landmark) had built a 27-17 after the first quarter behind eight points from Hailey Stine, and seven apiece by Michaela Keegan and Julia Ramos. The Rangers hit 11 of their 18 shots in the opening quarter to take a double-digit lead into the second. It was Keegan's and-one play that first got Drew up by double figures and the hosts led by as many as 13. Emma Powell's layup with 19 seconds left in the first was nixed by Ramos' layup with five ticks left to return the lead to 10 going to the second.

Elizabethtown (12-7, 5-3 Landmark) trailed by as many as 14 with 7:17 left in the half, but a layup by Rachel Liszkiewicz started a brief 6-0 run that got the Blue Jays back within eight after Emlet's layup. Her bucket forced Drew into a 30-second timeout to stem the change of momentum.

E-town trailed by nine at the half and Ruth had only scored five points over the first 20 minutes. The second half is where the sophomore forward made her mark on the game.

In a minute's span of the third quarter, Ruth made a bucket underneath, Veronica Christ nailed one of her three treys, and after a Rangers' miss, Ruth knocked down one of her team-high four three-pointers and it was only a three-point game, 44-41, with 6:00 to go in the third. Her own and-one cut the deficit to two points just 30 seconds later.

The Jays got within one but still couldn't get over the hump and grab the lead. Moe Davis Campbell and Keegan made sure of it with a little over three minutes remaining in the third stanza. However, another three from Ruth made it a one possession game. Emlet, who assisted on Ruth's trey, scored the next time down after Abby Beyer hauled down a miss by Drew. Emlet tied the game and then drilled a trey of her own to end the quarter and put Elizabethtown in front by three, 55-52.

The Rangers had the first five points of the fourth quarter to retake the lead, but Ruth wasn't about to let Drew get away. Back-to-back layups by the Bishop McDevitt grad put the Jays back in front. After Lydia Lawson split a pair at the line, Ruth canned another three to double the advantage to six, 63-57, with 7:09 left, still plenty of time to play.

Drew held E-town scoreless for nearly five minutes to climb back into the game. A Beyer three had made it a seven-point lead for the Blue Jays, but the Rangers made up that gap during the drought and took a 67-66 lead with 2:29 to go.

Emlet and Ruth help Elizabethtown put the Rangers away by scoring six of the final seven points and the defense only allowing a single point in the last 1:37 of the game to edge Drew 73-68. Tied 68-68 with 1:37 remaining, Ruth's fourth trey of the game proved to be the difference. Lawson found Ruth for the shot from beyond the arc with 39 seconds showing.

The Blue Jays were up four with 15 seconds left when Emlet came up with a steal with less than ten seconds to seal the game for E-town.

Ruth finished with a career-high 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting and 4-of-8 from deep. Emlet recorded 14 points, also a career-high, off the bench and also grabbed six rebounds. Christ had a team-high 10 boards and Lawson dished out five assists.

Elizabethtown remains on the road and will face Moravian on Saturday, February 3, at 2 p.m.
