Cabrini escapes Blue Jays in overtime

RADNOR, Pa. -- A 14-4 run for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had the Blue Jays out in front in the second half of Wednesday's non-conference matchup at Cabrini. The Cavaliers chipped away at the lead and forced overtime before overtaking E-town in the extra session and hanging on for a one-point, 78-77, OT win. Mikayla Ruth was one of five players in double figures for Elizabethtown with a team-high 18 points.

Lydia Lawson hit her first three shots of the New Year in the first quarter and accounted for all nine of Elizabethtown's (7-4) points in the first. Lawson was 3-for-3 from the floor while the rest of the team started off 0-for-10. Cabrini (8-2) shot just under 50 percent and led 16-9 after one period of play.

The Blue Jays picked up the play at the offensive end in the second quarter behind Veronica Christ's eight points. Christ, making her first career start, shot 3-for-4 in the second quarter and as a team, the Jays were 7-for-13 from the field and outscored the Cavaliers 20-15.

Rachel Liszkiewicz assisted on Lawson's layup plus the harm toward the end of the first half. E-town led 29-28 with a matter of seconds left on the clock, but Kate Lennon drained one of her game-high four treys to lift Cabrini into the lead at the half, 31-29.

After a scoreless first half, Emma Hoesman and Ruth combined to score 17 of Elizabethtown's 25 third-quarter points as the hosts moved ahead by double digits with just over a minute to go in the third.

E-town managed only 36.4 percent shooting the fourth and Cabrini began to claw its way back into the game at the foul line. The Cavaliers hit 10-of-13 freebies in the fourth and where 25-for-33 in the game. The Jays shot 87.5 percent from the charity stripe, but only took 16 foul shots the entire game.

Both teams had chances late in the fourth to win it, but overtime was needed.

In the OT session, an Abby Beyer three put Elizabethtown back in front 69-67. Hoesman knocked down two foul shots and the lead moved to four, 71-67.

The Blue Jays led by three with under a minute to go, but were unable to close it out as Cabrini shot its way back and held on as an E-town game-winner at the buzzer wouldn't go. The Jays fell to 6-4 in non-conference play.

Ruth led the team with 18 points. Hoesman added 16, Lawson finished with 14, Christ had 12, and Beyer ended up with 11.

Elizabethtown jumps back into Landmark Conference play on Saturday, January 6 at Scranton.
