McDaniel holds off men's swimming

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- McDaniel scored a decisive win in the 200-yard breaststroke to edge the Elizabethtown College men's swim team, 46-45, in its final road dual meet of the season, Saturday.

The Blue Jays (5-5) collected four wins on the day with senior David Foery and freshman Alex Pecher contributing to two apiece.

Foery and Pecher, along with Casey Marshall and Alec Schneider swam a team-best 3:22.76 to win the 400 freestyle relay and draw E-town within a point at meet's end.

McDaniel's untraditional five-lane pool necessitates a different point-scoring format than is customary for Elizabethtown home meets in a six-lane pool. Though Guillaume Gouronc posted the Jays' second fastest time this season with a 2:23.71 and Ben Spangler took third in 2:24.79, the Green Terror (3-5-1) outscored Elizabethtown 5-4 in the 200 breast on the strength of Paul Van Nevel's victory (2:20.88) to secure the meet.

Pecher had a fantastic day, winning the 100 free in a season-best 49.71, setting a personal best in the 50 free of 22.65 and taking the second leg of the winning 400 free relay. Pecher's 100 time was good for 14th in the Landmark this season.

Foery recorded his top time of the season in the 200 free with a 1:55.44 to lead freshman teammate Austin Dolaway (1:56.13) in a 1-2 finish.

Ben Spangler, swimming uncontested in the 400 IM, established E-town's new quickest time with a 4:53.16.

Van Nevel swam lead off for McDaniel's winning 400 medley relay team and also won the 200 back in addition to the 200 breast. Freshman Jose Pac also won three times for the hosts, taking the 50 free (21.92), 500 free (5:00.18) and joining Van Nevel on the 400 medley relay.

Elizabethtown wraps up the regular season at home next Friday at 6 p.m., against Frostburg State.
