Juniata withstands Blue Jays' push

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Elizabethtown trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half before slicing Juniata's lead to one early in the second half of Wednesday night's Landmark Conference road contest. The veteran-laden Eagles wouldn't break, though, as they held off the Blue Jays 75-64.

Of the eight players Juniata rolled out for 10 minutes or more, only one --freshman Marcus Hall-- was not an upperclassmen. That experience has paid dividends for the Eagles (15-3, 4-3 Landmark), who led from start-to-finish.

Connor Moffatt had 11 first-half points and Ethan DuBois recorded eight, but a two-point Juniata lead less than six minutes in quickly ballooned to 13, 26-13, with a 13-2 run over a stretch of 5:54.

Elizabethtown (4-13, 1-6), looking for its second consecutive conference win after an 82-70 victory at Goucher last Saturday, had to play catch up the rest of the way.

The Blue Jays trailed 40-31 at the half, but used a 12-4 surge behind five Bryce Greene points and baskets from DuBois, Moffatt and Brandon Berry to draw within one, 44-43, with 14:26 to go.

When Greene's jumper fell through with 5:58 remaining, E-town was still in a two-possession game, down 60-54. The Eagles answered with timely baskets down the stretch, prevailing for their second win in a row after dropping 3-of-4 between Jan. 6-17.

Greene was held to two points on 1-of-6 shooting in the first half, but came back strong in the second to post a team-high 16. DuBois matched his career-high with 15 points, while handing out a game-high six assists. Moffatt also reached double figures with 14 points and led the Jays on the glass with eight rebounds.

E-town shot 40.7% (24-of-59) for the night, but the Eagles overcame a 2-of-11 effort from beyond the arc by outscoring the Jays 34-22 in the paint on their way to making 56.3% of their attempts overall (27-of-48).

Two-time All-Landmark First Team forward Marcus Lee was once again a force for Juniata. Lee registered game-highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds on an efficient 9-of-11 shooting in 34 minutes. Junior guard Brandon Martinazzi added 17 points and Paul Martello had 10 off the bench.

Elizabethtown returns to Thompson Gymnasium Saturday to start the second half of Landmark Conference play against Scranton at 2 p.m.
