Men's basketball falls to Scranton 73-64

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Scranton had a near perfect day at the foul line and controlled the boards in sending the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team to a 73-64 Landmark Conference defeat Saturday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium.

Bryce Greene came out firing in the second half, knocking down three 3-pointers and converting a traditional 3-point play to account for 12 straight Blue Jay points.

Elizabethtown (4-14, 1-7 Landmark), which trailed by 13 at halftime, got all the way back within one, 47-46, when Ethan DuBois dialed up a long-range shot with 13:31 to go. The Royals responded with an 11-2 run to reestablish a double-digit lead with less than 10 minutes to play.

The Blue Jays, who got 13 points from DuBois and seven apiece from Brandon Berry, Connor Moffatt and Matt Thomas, were forced to play catch-up for most of the afternoon after shooting 32.1% (9-of-28) in the first half and connecting on just 2-of-12 3-pointers.

Despite Greene's blistering start to the second, Britt Moore's club faced a three-to-four possession deficit throughout the second half. Greene went over the 20-point plateau for the eighth time this season on a layup that drew the Jays within six, 64-58, with 3:57 left and finished with a game-high 21.

Scranton showed poise down the stretch, making 7-of-8 at the charity stripe in the final 35 seconds. Leading scorer Ethan Danzig, who had 19 points on the afternoon, was 8-of-8 at the foul line in the game and Matthew Mancuso (13 points) went 5-of-5 as the Royals (10-9, 6-2) were 18-of-19 in the contest, good for 94.7%.

Kevin Doolan had 12 points and Kyle DeVerna 11 for Scranton, which has won 7-of-8 since the calendar flipped to 2018 and eight of its last nine overall.

The only Royal starter not in double figures, Drew Schankweiler, had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Scranton held a 15-rebound advantage at the final buzzer, 38-23.

E-town elevated its game in the second half, outscoring the Royals 40-36 and shooting 53.8% (14-of-26). Thomas (eight) and DuBois (six) combined for 14 of the Jays' 23 boards.

The Blue Jays host Drew on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
