Christman's OT winner gives Michael 100th career win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- It was a day of celebrations for the Elizabethtown College field hockey team. E-town and visiting Stockton played 70 scoreless minutes and needed overtime to decide a winner. Emma Christman came through for the Blue Jays six minutes into the first OT period to lift EC to a 1-0 win. With the victory, coach Brandy Michael earned her 100th career win.

Stockton (1-1) was coming off a commanding 7-2 victory over Arcadia in the Ospreys' season opener on Friday night. Elizabethtown (1-1) had faced off with No. 9 Franklin & Marshall two nights ago and fell 3-0.

Jennelle Long had the game's first scoring opportunity at 5:52, but Margo Donlin made the stop and the non-conference contest remained scoreless.

Stockton provided a few uneasy minutes for the Elizabethtown defense with a pair of penalty corners, but Sarah Gawrysiak and Leah Davies both had shots blocked.

Donlin slapped a shot away with her blocker at 18:56 that came off the stick of Lauren Sontupe. It was the final shot of the first half on goal for the Ospreys.

E-town threatened in the final five minutes and were close to taking a 1-0 into the half. Allie Patterson's shot from out top was stopped by Erin Sorochynskyj. Christman inserted a penalty corner moments later that ended up on Addie Stang's stick. Her shot was goal bound, but Caroline Bowman was there with her goalie beaten to make the defensive save.

The Ospreys had a little bit better of the play in the first, but Elizabethtown came out focused in the second half and pinned Stockton back for much of the 35 minutes.

Olivia Beachley put a shot on goal off another E-town corner. Her shot was saved by Sorochynskyj, who made a second save on Emily Garvin's attempt.

Just as Stockton could get the defensive zone cleared, E-town was coming right back at them. Maggie Fees, Kendra Downey, and Renee Grill didn't allow any sort of counter as the Jays continued to press for the game's first goal.

Megan Eppley twice, Madison Kubik, and Garvin each had shots stopped by the Stockton goalie and Sunday afternoon's game would roll into overtime with no score.

From the whistle of the first overtime, the Blue Jays were on the attack. Stang had a breakaway attempt denied by Sorochynskyj 3:41 into the OT. Two minutes later, though, the Blue Jays were able to end it.

Beachley collected the ball near midfield and dumped it ahead to Christman. Christman beat her defender and raced in on goal. Sorochynskyj charged out to stop the senior's attack, but Christman maneuvered herself and ball left of the oncoming keeper, and from a tight angle on the left side, threaded the game-winning shot into the right side of the cage.

Donlin made three saves to get her first shutoff of the season. Sorochynskyj ended with nine saves.

The win was coach Brandy Michael's 100th of her career in just her ninth season. She became just the second coach in program history to reach triple-digit wins.
