Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Good's goal not enough as Eastern outlasts E-town

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Despite the game-time temperature, it took the Elizabethtown College field hockey team's offense some time to warm up in a 2-1 non-conference loss to Eastern on Wednesday at Wolf Field. Charity Good had E-town's only goal of the game.

Eastern (4-5) dictated much of the tempo for large portions of the first half. Margo Donlin stopped Gina Miller's shot from out top a little over 11 minutes into the first half, the game's first shot.

The Eagles put one on the board at 18:43 as Alison Hoag's initial attempt was snuffed by a defender's stick, but the game came right back to Hoag. She teed up another and ripped it lower left and into the back of the cage.

The teams went back and forth between the circles as neither offense could get a hold of the game. Eastern had a few penalty corners, but only garnered one shot attempt off of them, which was blocked.

Elizabethtown (4-5) had one corner of its own and finally at 33:18, Charity Good put a deflection on goal. Nicole Berger made the save for the Eagles and Eastern led 1-0 at the half.

The Blue Jays looked like a different group than from the first half and came out on the attack to begin the second half. E-town pinned Eastern back and took turns putting shots on goal. Sierra Zittle and Olivia Beachley had back-to-back shots saved. Megan Eppley set one loose off a corner insert from Beachley, but against Berger parried it aside. Good's follow-up attempt was also stopped.

Eppley and Good did help the Jays convert a shot into a goal off a corner at 42:10. Eppley stretched out to receive Beachley's insert, brought it into the zone and corked one right side that took a deflection off Good's stick to beat Berger and dodged all the traffic in front to record her first of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

Less than ten minutes later, Miller connected on her third of the season. The MAC Freedom's assist leader took Maya Wales' insert, took a touch to set up her shot, and sent one straight into the cage untouched to give Eastern the lead back.

The Eagles' defense held the Blue Jays without a shot on goal for the remainder of the game. Elizabethtown had three more penalty corners after Miller's goal, but couldn't get the shots on target.

Donlin made several saves in the final ten minutes to keep the Jays within a goal, but Eastern hung on for the 2-1 win, its third straight win over E-town.

Elizabethtown will hop back into Landmark Conference play at Scranton on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.
