Offensive outburst puts field hockey back in win column

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- With a struggling offense, the Elizabethtown College field hockey team clicked offensively on Saturday in a 5-0 Landmark Conference opening win over Drew at Wolf Field. Olivia Beachley scored twice and was one of four different Blue Jay players to record a goal in the game.

Brooke Zehr came on as a substitute at 15:00 and within 35 seconds, had recorded her first career point with an assist. Zehr jumped into the play at Elizabethtown's (4-4, 1-0 Landmark) offensive end. At the top of the circle, Zehr wristed in a ball toward the far post. It was right on line to Emma Christman, who slapped it home to make it 1-0. It was Christman's team-leading fifth of the season.

The Blue Jays had a penalty corner that Drew (0-7, 0-1 Landmark) was unable to clear. The ball stayed in near goal and eventually Charity Good would get off a shot. Rangers' goalie Ryann Callaghan made the initial stop, but the rebound was collected by Beachley, who found the back of the cage and made it 2-0.

Another corner led to E-town's third goal. Christman had the ball out top, a little off center to the left, and ripped in a shot toward goal. Addie Stang deflected the ball, far-post bound, and redirected it near post to beat Callaghan and increase the lead to 3-0.

Allie Patterson scored her first of the season a few minutes before halftime. Emily Garvin crossed a ball from the right, Good got her stick to it and put the ball on a path toward the far post. Patterson was there to tap it in.

Hannah Mack came in for Margo Donlin at the half, and like Donlin, did not need to touch the ball during her 35 minutes of action. The Blue Jays' defense limited Drew and held the Rangers to zero shots.

The offensive pace for E-town slowed down in the second half as the sun beat down on Wolf Field. Beachley did get her second goal of the game with four seconds to go off another Elizabethtown corner. Beachley inserted and the ball wound up on Patterson's stick on the right side. She threaded the ball across to Beachley at the back post. The sophomore one-touched it in for her third of the season.

Callaghan had 17 stops in the game for Drew.

The field hockey team will host Eastern on Wednesday, September 27 at 4:30 p.m.
