Anders goes over 1,000 career assists in sweep of Alvernia

READING, Pa. -- Junior setter Gabby Anders surpassed the 1,000-assist mark for her career with 40 Monday night in Elizabethtown's 3-0 road victory at Alvernia.

The Blue Jays (6-3) extended their winning streak to three matches and got a balanced effort once again on offense. Anders was finding all of her big hitters, as Mackenzie Garner, Sarah Schneider and Elle Shatto grabbed a share of the team lead in kills with 13 apiece.

Shatto and Garner were extremely effective against the Golden Wolves (8-4), with Shatto attacking at a .480 clip (13 kills-1 error-25 attempts) and Garner .478 (13-2-23). Schneider was solid at .297 (13-2-37).

Elizabethtown won the first two sets by matching 25-20 scores and completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory in the third.

The trio of Garner, Schneider and Shatto combined for 39 of E-town's 46 kills on the night and Alex Hinsey's squad once again limited its offensive miscues. Coming off a season-low six attacking errors in a sweep of Penn State Berks last Saturday, the Jays made just seven against Alvernia.

Anders, who's averaging a hair under 10 assists per set (328 in 33 sets) for the season, had 10 or more in each of the three sets, Monday. She came up with 12 on 13 E-town kills in the first, 15 on 18 kills in the second and 13 on 15 kills in the final stanza. The Lancaster native ended the night with 1,007 career assists to her name.

Freshman libero Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro led all Blue Jays with 15 digs and senior Chelsea Gallagher had 13. Garner assisted on four blocks, while Anders and Emily Sexton provided two each.

Alvernia received a match-high 17 kills from Kristen Sipling and a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs from Laura Wachowciz, but remained winless against the Blue Jays in nine all-time meetings.

Elizabethtown will take part in the Arcadia Knights Invitational this coming Friday and Saturday. The Blue Jays face Rowan, Friday at 5 p.m., on the opening day of the tournament.
