Women's volleyball registers fourth consecutive sweep

GLENSIDE, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's volleyball team opened play at the Arcadia Knights Invitational Friday afternoon by making quick work of Rowan in a 3-0 victory.

Since suffering a 3-1 setback to York on Sept. 11, the Blue Jays have not dropped a game during their current four-match winning streak.

The Profs (6-6) led briefly in the first set and grabbed the opening point of the second, otherwise it was all Elizabethtown. The Blue Jays were victorious by 25-18, 25-16 and 25-18 scores.

Elle Shatto amassed a team-leading 13 kills, and Mackenzie Garner and Sarah Schneider each had 11 as the trio reached double figures for the second straight match.

Garner was nearly perfect with 11 kills and no errors on 12 attempts (.917).

E-town (7-3) would have led the first set wire-to-wire if not for six-point outburst from Rowan around the midway point, fueled by three blocks. The Profs took their only lead of the set, 17-16, but the Blue Jays rattled off nine of the final 10 points to claim the opening set without fanfare.

A pair of kills and a block by Garner helped the Blue and Gray to an early 5-1 lead in the second. They maintained an advantage into the late stages of the set before again finishing with a flurry. Morgan Reiss connected for two straight kills, Schneider had one and the last two points came on Shatto aces.

Freshman libero Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro served up three aces during a 7-0 run early in the third, sending E-town on its way. The Blue Jays have already matched last season's win total with seven.

Tietze Di-Toro collected five of the Jays' 10 aces in the match. Four came from Shatto and Gabby Anders had the other.

Anders assisted on 32 of the team's 41 kills, Garner produced three blocks --two solos-- and Tietze-Di Toro paced E-town with 16 digs.

Elizabethtown has found its groove offensively lately and Friday was no exception. Behind Garner's stellar .917 attacking percentage, the Blue Jays attacked at a .252 clip for the match with 41 kills and 14 errors on 107 attempts. During its four-match winning streak, E-town is hitting .323 with 161 kills against just 42 errors on 368 attempts.

The Blue Jays remain in Glenside for a pair of matches Saturday. They'll face Washington College at 11 a.m., before wrapping up play against the host Knights at 3 p.m.
