Blue Jays go unbeaten at Arcadia Invitational

GLENSIDE, Pa. -- Elizabethtown concluded a perfect 3-0 weekend at the Arcadia Invitational Saturday by taking down a pair of 11-win teams. The Blue Jays defeated Washington College 3-0 in their morning match and topped the host Knights, 3-1, in the afternoon.

Eleven-win Washington College posed a legitimate threat to Elizabethtown's four-match winning streak, but after outlasting the Shorewomen 26-24 in the opening set, the Blue Jays asserted themselves as the better team in registering their fifth straight sweep.

The recipe for E-town's recent success has come from strong play all over the court, which carried through into Saturday morning's match. Elle Shatto and Mackenzie Garner led the Blue Jays' attack with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, Sarah Schneider contributed nine kills and four aces, Gabby Anders piled up 33 assists, and Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro had 18 digs.

Anders also recorded three aces and Shatto two as Elizabethtown finished with 10 for the second straight match.

The lead changed hands eight times in the first set, but the Blue Jays, who were down 20-17 late, got their offense going just in time. Shatto, Schneider, Garner and Morgan Reiss all provided kills to put E-town in front 24-23. The Shorewomen (11-3) would tie it once more at 24 on a Cassie Kowalski kill, before the Jays scored the final two points, winning the set on a Schneider ace.

There would be no such drama in the second or third sets, however, as the Blue Jays never trailed in either.

Elizabethtown finished the match with a .224 attacking percentage to Washington's .107. The Jays and Shorewomen each had seven team blocks. Garner led E-town with four on a solo and three assists, while Anders and Reiss had three assists apiece.

The Shorewomen did not feature a single player with double-digit kills, but Kowalski had nine and Abby Smith eight. Setter Taylor Horan had a team-high 19 assists to go along with four kills and six digs.

All-tournament team selection Mackenzie Garner produced a match-high 15 kills and five blocks (four solos) as the Blue Jays made it a 3-0 weekend with a 3-1 victory over Arcadia.

E-town dominated the opening set with Garner and Elle Shatto accounting for four kills each. The Knights (11-4) responded by winning the second, but the Blue Jays immediately answered by claiming the third and fourth to extend their winning streak to six, the program's longest since 2015.

Sarah Schneider collected her third double-double of the season with 13 kills and 12 digs and Shatto had 12 kills, eight digs and three aces.

Despite losing the second set, 25-18, it was the Blue Jays' best in terms of attacking efficiency with a .346 percentage (12 kills-3 errors-26 attempts).

Garner had a kill and two blocks and Schneider picked up a kill and a block during a five-point run that swung the third set in the Jays' favor. E-town (9-3) broke free from a 15-all deadlock in the fourth and won six of the final seven points to end the match.

Anders assisted on 36 kills, while also recording three kills and seven digs. Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro finished with 22 digs, her second highest total of the season.

Arcadia got 11 kills and 13 digs from Lauren Enfield, while Emily Eng supplied five of the Knights' 11 aces and 20 digs.

The Blue Jays return to Thompson Gymnasium Monday evening for their second home match of the season, where they'll face Dickinson at 7 p.m.
