Blue Jays cruise against Penn Sate Berks

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown did a whole lot right and very little wrong, sweeping its home opener against Penn State Berks, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium.

The Blue Jays featured a balanced offensive attack with all 34 of their kills coming from six different players. Mackenzie Garner paced the hosts with nine, Sarah Schneider and Elle Shatto each had seven, Morgan Reiss accounted for six and Gabby Anders five.

In fact, Elizabethtown went just one deep off the bench in disposing of the Nittany Lions in 70 minutes.

Anders impacted the game in an array of ways, starting with a match-high 28 assists. The junior from Lancaster also recorded her five kills on just six attempts (.833), tied teammate Chelsea Gallagher with a match-high three aces and assisted on three blocks.

E-town dominated the first set, winning 25-9, but had to battle through a slower start to the second. A 9-2 run fueled by two kills and two blocks from Garner put the Jays (5-3) comfortably ahead 19-14, though, and they eventually put the set away, 25-20.

Garner, who surpassed 700 career kills in the victory, was targeted by Anders heavily in the third when she came up with six of her nine kills as the Jays completed the sweep, 25-12. The all-conference middle hitter tied a season-high with six blocks (one solo, five assists).

Shatto and Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro both finished with 10 digs.

Elizabethtown hit .354 for the match with just six errors on 79 attempts. The Jays also had nine aces and seven team blocks in the victory. Penn State Berks had 23 kills and 23 errors on 92 attempts (.000). Megan Lackman had a team-high seven kills for the Nittany Lions (3-7), while Alexis Horst had six kills and nine digs, and Abbie Carr four kills and three blocks.

The Blue Jays head to Reading Monday evening for a non-conference road match at Alvernia. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
