Women's volleyball edged by F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Elizabethtown pushed Franklin & Marshall to the limit in head coach Alex Hinsey's debut Friday evening. The Blue Jays fended off match-point in the fourth set and forced a fifth, but the Diplomats held on for a 3-2 victory.

Sarah Schneider came within two kills of her career-high, leading the way for the Blue and Gray with 18 and 15 digs for a double-double. Mackenzie Garner added 13 kills on the night.

Behind an errorless first set from Schneider (7 kills-0 errors-10 attempts), Elizabethtown jumped on top of the Diplomats (1-0) with a 25-21 victory. Elle Shatto contributed four kills in the set, with Gabby Anders and Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro each registering an ace.

Franklin & Marshall flipped the score around to win the second, 25-21, and held off a late charge from the Blue Jays (0-1) in the third by scoring the final four points for a 25-22 advantage and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Trailing 24-23 in the fourth, the Jays got a kill from senior captain Morgan Reiss to tie the set and stave off defeat. E-town eventually prevailed 27-25 when Schneider put away the set with a kill set up by Anders.

An early run in the fifth set allowed the hosts to pull ahead 8-4 and Elizabethtown could not get closer than two points the rest of the way. Shatto and Reiss chipped in offensively with eight kills and six kills, respectively.

Anders had a team-high 29 assists to go along with four kills and nine digs. Tietze-Di Toro (team-high 19 digs), Chelsea Gallagher (14) and Shatto (10) joined Schneider with double-digit digs.

For Franklin & Marshall, Grace Polisano had a match-high 20 kills to go along with 11 assists. Grace Maggiori missed out on a triple-double by a single kill, finishing with nine kills, 46 assists and 12 digs. The Diplomats also got a strong performance from Delaney Hahn, who totaled 14 kills and 19 digs.

Elizabethtown will travel back to F&M Saturday where it will face Messiah and Lancaster Bible.
