Hinsey picks up first two wins as E-town sweeps Messiah and Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's volleyball team made a winner out of Alex Hinsey for the first time in his collegiate coaching career with a 3-0 sweep of Messiah in the Crosstown Crossover Saturday morning and added a 3-0 victory over Lancaster Bible in afternoon play.

The Blue Jays (2-1) snapped an eight-match losing streak to the Falcons dating back to 2010. Middle hitters Mackenzie Garner and Morgan Reiss controlled play at the net throughout the match, as Garner finished with a team-high 11 kills and Reiss seven. The duo registered a pair of block assists as well.

Elizabethtown won the first set 25-23 and opened up a sizable lead in the second to put the Falcons on the ropes, 25-16. Messiah (1-2) didn't go without a fight, but the Jays ultimately prevailed in the third, 25-21.

Not only did the Blue and Gray end an eight-match slide against their rivals from Grantham, but Saturday's result marked the first sweep of Messiah since the 2009 Commonwealth Conference semifinals.

Elizabethtown hit .279 in the match with 34 kills and 10 errors on 86 attempts, while Messiah countered with a .206 attacking percentage (38-16-107). Gabby Anders and Messiah's Jennifer Rusling shared match-high assist totals with 30 apiece.

Chelsea Gallagher provided a team-leading three aces and freshman Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro led the way with nine digs.

In its final match of the weekend, Elizabethtown cruised past Lancaster Bible 25-20, 25-17 and 25-15.

Garner again paved the way with a team-high nine kills, backed by Elle Shatto's eight and Reiss' six. Shatto also chipped in four aces, Anders had 29 assists and Tietze-Di Toro 11 digs.

The Blue Jays will try to extend their winning streak to three matches when they head to Haverford Wednesday for a 5 p.m. first serve.
