Haverford holds off Blue Jays in thriller

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Elizabethtown fought back from a pair of one-set deficits, but Haverford saved some heroics for the fifth, navigating through two match points to eventually best a valiant effort by the Blue Jays, 3-2 (25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 22-25, 20-18), Wednesday evening at Gooding '84 Arena.

Junior setter Gabby Anders became just the third player in program history to reach 60 assists in a match. Elle Shatto produced a career-high 20 kills, Mackenzie Garner had 19 and Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro racked up 34 digs in the Jays' bid to knock off Haverford for the first time since 2012.

Elizabethtown jumped in front 5-1 in the deciding set, but the Fords (3-2) roared back to take the lead at 9-8. A few points later, the visiting Blue Jays used a 4-1 run that included kills from Sarah Schneider and Emily Sexton to open a 14-12 lead for match point. Both teams then stayed alive winning two potential match points each before consecutive kills from Sydney Miller and Natalie Pisch vaulted Haverford to the win in an instant classic.

Anders (60 assists, 12 digs), Shatto (20 kills, 12 digs) and Schneider (11 kills, 12 digs) all finished with double-doubles for the Blue and Gray. Sexton added 10 kills, Garner had six blocks and Chelsea Gallagher 14 digs. In all, the Jays finished with four players in double figures in kills and five in digs.

While E-town's 69 team kills jumped off the stat sheet compared to Haverford's 51, 38 of the Blue Jays' attack attempts also ended as errors, allowing the Fords to remain in the match despite both teams finishing with five aces apiece.

Claire Nicholas led Haverford with 17 kills and Pisch had 13 kills to go along with 13 digs.

Elizabethtown travels to Penn State Harrisburg for a noon start on Saturday.
