Baseball rallies past York with five-run ninth

YORK, Pa. -- There aren't many ways to top a walk-off grand slam, but Elizabethtown tried mightily to produce a Hollywood ending better than last Sunday's.

One strike away from defeat for the second straight game, the Blue Jays got a two-run game-tying single off the bat of Colby Smith and a Mike Christy three-run homer in the top of the ninth to rally past bewildered York, 10-7, Tuesday afternoon.

Despite Christy's RBI double to score Smith in the first, Elizabethtown (22-13) played catch up for most of the day after surrendering five runs to the Spartans in their first at-bats.

The Blue Jays cut York's (18-19) lead to one in the fifth on an Anthony Knight single that brought in Nick Bein. Christy (single) and Bein (hit by pitch) accounted for a pair of E-town runs in the third.

York took a two-run lead to the ninth on the strength of Patrick Clement's RBI single in the sixth, but Elizabethtown apparently hasn't run out of late-inning magic just yet.

Frank Ragozzino led off with a walk against Spartan pitcher Jeff Noss before Anthony Knight and Kyle Fackler dropped bloop singles to nearly the same spot between second base and center field, loading the bases.

Smith got a new lease on life when left fielder Logan Countryman couldn't quite reel in a long foul ball and the junior from Middlesex, New Jersey, made the most of his second chance. Facing a 2-2 count with two outs against York closer Will Grega, Smith ripped a single to left, scoring pinch-runner Michael Sheaffer and Knight to tie the game at seven.

Sunday's hero, Christy, then slammed a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right for a three-run round-tripper to supply the Jays with their only lead of the game.

Andrew Brndjar breezed through the ninth with only a one-out single allowed and struck out one in two innings for his second win.

York registered five runs against starter Alec Miller, who recorded just one out. Braden Stinar did well to limit the Spartans over the next 5.1 innings, giving up two runs and striking out two. Jared Witner worked 1.1 scoreless innings, bridging the gap to Brndjar.

Christy went 3 for 5 with a double, home run and six RBIs. He's piled up 13 RBIs in his last four games and is up to 32 on the year. Knight was 3 for 4 and Smith went 1 for 4 with a pair of walks and three runs scored.

Richy Masciarelli scored a pair of runs and stole his 20th base of the season. Masciarelli is the first Blue Jay to steal 20 bases or more in a season since Kyle Gable (22) in 2013.

Seth Brosius recorded a game-high four hits (4 for 6) for York and lead-off hitter Collin Crowell was 3 for 5.

Elizabethtown is back at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium to conclude the regular season Saturday and Sunday against Drew. Saturday's doubleheader is set to roll at 1 p.m.
