Baseball drops game one to Drew, faces must win Sunday

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Drew scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning to take a 2-1 victory over Elizabethtown in game one of their Landmark Conference series Saturday at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.

The Rangers secured their spot in the upcoming Landmark Conference Championships with the victory; now the Blue Jays must win Sunday to join them.

Saturday's start was delayed two hours due to persistent midday rain, but starting pitchers Kevin Elwell and Ryan Fitzpatrick were ready to go when the game finally got underway.

The two aces traded zeros for much of the afternoon, with Drew scoring a run in the second on an Isaiah Mateo infield single to first and Elizabethtown responding with a Brian Portillo RBI double in the fourth.

Elwell suffered a tough luck defeat with two runs --one earned-- and six hits allowed over seven innings. Fitzpatrick gave up six hits over eight innings and struck out three.

Drew's (26-12, 11-5 Landmark) Jonathan Rodrigues scored the go-ahead run on an error in the top of the eighth and the Blue Jays could not mount a comeback in their final two at-bats.

Landmark ERA leader Tommy Broyles pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

Portillo had half of E-town's (22-14, 9-7) hits, going 3 for 4. Kyle Fackler, Nick Lorenz, James Kantner and Frank Ragozzino each had one as the Jays' modest four-game winning streak came to an end.

The Rangers clinched their second straight Landmark Championships berth after a three-year absence. Mike Miraglia doubled and went 2 for 4 to lead the visitors.

Elizabethtown now knows it will need at least one win in Sunday's doubleheader, possibly two, if Moravian can defeat Catholic in the completion of their suspended game, to qualify for next weekend's double-elimination championship tournament. Game one of tomorrow's doubleheader starts at noon.
