Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Stockton surges past women's lacrosse 14-10

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Junior Katie Thompson hit the 50-point plateau for the first time in her career and Elizabethtown led by as many as three goals late in the first half, before visiting Stockton took over with nine straight goals Wednesday afternoon at Wolf Field. The Ospreys held off a late push from the Blue Jays to escape with a 14-10 victory.

Thompson entered the game already having set a new career-high for goals in a season, but added five to her total for 25 on the season. She also assisted on twin sister Carly Thompson's opening goal four minutes in to equal her career-high for assists in a season with 25.

With Carly Thompson, Addie Stang, Katie Thompson and Madelyn Baker scoring in the first 14:30, the Blue Jays (8-2) led 4-1 by the midway point of the first half.

Katie Thompson netted Elizabethtown's next two goals and the hosts still maintained a three-goal cushion, 6-3, with less than 10 minutes remaining before halftime.

Stockton (6-1) started to assert itself late in the period, however.

Kim Raichelson's second goal of the game brought the Ospreys back within 6-4 with 7:33 to go. Gaby Ojeda (free position) and Mary Schmid then scored nine seconds apart to tie the game at six. Stockton would take its first lead with just 33 ticks left in the first, as Alexa Rubino set up Abbey Yannacone for a 7-6 lead the visitors took to the break.

Stockton's speed continued to cause issues for the Jays early in the second half. The Ospreys scored four straight goals off of free position attempts, including two by Melanie Patterson to take an 11-6 lead. When Rubino beat E-town goalie Abby Kopytko with 16:11 to go, Stockton had a six-goal lead, 12-6, the largest by either team in the contest.

Elizabethtown tried mightily to make it a game in the final 15 minutes of regulation. Katie Thompson scored at the beginning and end of a four-goal run that saw Stang and Dana Robidoux tally in between to bring the Blue and Gray within two, 12-10, with 5:11 to go. The Ospreys closed it out with two goals in the final 1:34.

Stang (two goals, one assist) and Carly Thompson (one goal, two assists) each had three points for Elizabethtown, which was outshot 32-20. Katie Thompson caused a game-high six turnovers to go along with four ground balls. Becky Graessle and Robidoux had three caused turnovers apiece.

Stockton held a 15-11 edge in draw controls, led by five from Rubino and four from Ojeda.

Kopytko stopped 10 shots in goal, while her counterpart, Maura Twiggs, was credited with seven saves.

Elizabethtown returns to Landmark Conference play Saturday at Drew. Game time is 3 p.m.
