Lorenz goes yard, Blue Jays fall to Widener in extras

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Nine innings of regulation baseball weren't enough for the Elizabethtown College baseball team and Widener on Wednesday at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium. A tenth inning was needed to decide a victor and the Pride came out on top in ten with a 5-4 non-conference win over the Blue Jays. Nick Lorenz homered for E-town and Kyle Fackler moved within two hits of breaking the all-time career hits record.

Each team had an answer for the other throughout the game. Dylan Peiffer singled in Justin Healey in the second to give Widener (23-11) a 1-0 lead.

In the Jays' half of the second, with one out in the inning, Lorenz liked the first pitch he saw and jacked it out to left field, well over the fence, for his fifth home run of the season. The homer is now a new single-season career high for the junior short stop. After two innings, the game was tied 1-1.

Glenn Seymour responded with a solo shot of his own in the third to return the lead to the Pride.

Tom Armstrong drew a lead-off walk in the third for Elizabethtown (18-13) and was on third for Richy Masciarelli. The senior outfielder singled to left for the one-out RBI to tie the game a second time.

Alec Miller worked through the fifth inning and kept Widener from retaking the lead. Mike Elfreth singled to right and moved a runner into scoring position for the Pride, but Miller got a fly out to Masciarelli in center to end the inning.

Armstrong got on base for the second straight at-bat, this time singling through the left side. James Kantner doubled to right center and the Blue Jays were in business with two runners in scoring position.

Fackler skied a fly ball to center that allowed Armstrong to score from third. Colby Smith knocked in Kanter from second with a two-out RBI single to right and E-town's lead doubled to 4-2 by the end of the fifth.

Widener put up two runs in the sixth to knot the game up at 4-4 on an RBI ground out by Bob Barnett and also scored on an Elizabethtown error.

Anthony Cameron and Andrew Brndjar each pitched two innings of relief and held the Pride scoreless the final three innings. However, E-town left two runners on base in the seventh and eighth innings. There was a runner at second and third for EC in the bottom of the eighth, but Widener got out of it and wound up forcing extras.

Stephen DeBellis singled to lead off the top of the tenth, advanced to second on a sac bunt, and moved up to third on a deep fly out to right. Barnett, the next batter, with two outs, singled to center to give Widener the lead at 5-4.

Bryson Turner came on to close out the game for the Pride and got Elizabethtown to go down 1-2-3 to earn his first save of the season.

Lorenz led E-town with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Fackler, Masciarelli, Smith, and Lorenz each had one RBI. Miller pitched six innings for the no decision. Cameron went two innings and did not allow a run. Brndjar struck out two batters in two innings.

The baseball team is set for an important series at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium this weekend. The Jays' doubleheader with Juniata will begin Saturday, April 29, at 1 p.m.
