River Hawks swoop in late to grab series from Blue Jays

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- A six-run sixth inning and late one-run lead weren't enough for Elizabethtown to hold off Susquehanna in the final game of their three-game Landmark Conference series Sunday afternoon. The River Hawks scored two in the eighth to claim a 9-8 victory and take 2 of 3 games on the weekend.

Andrew Coleman went opposite field with the first pitch he saw from Ryan Beckwith to start the eighth, setting himself up in scoring position with a lead-off double. Kyle Fackler sacrificed Coleman to third and Richy Masciarelli's one-out fielder's choice brought the sophomore home for an 8-7 E-town lead --just their second of the afternoon after trailing by as many as five runs.

The Blue Jays (18-12, 6-6 Landmark) were unable to hold the lead, however, as Susquehanna answered with three hits and two runs in the bottom of the inning. Jenkins' sac fly tied the game at eight and Taylor Luckenbill's two-out single to right scored Zach Leone with the eventual game-winning run.

E-town surely wouldn't have been in position to steal Sunday's game from the River Hawks (20-13, 11-4) if not for a monster six-run sixth inning that erased a 6-1 deficit and put the guests ahead 7-6.

Six batters recorded hits and two walked as the Blue and Gray sent 11 to to the plate in the inning. A lead-off walk to Colby Smith and singles by Mike Christ and Nick Lorenz loaded the bases with no outs.

Nick Bein's sacrifice fly started the scoring for Elizabethtown. Anthony Knight (single), Coleman (double), Masciarelli (two-run single) and Smith (single) all knocked in runs before the River Hawks could escape.

It was a completely unexpected turn of events for the Jays, who had just one hit in five innings off starter Sean Rodriguez and reliever Tyson Thrush, and got their only run after four walks in the fourth sent Rodriguez packing.

Elizabethtown used a committee of pitchers to try and keep a potent Susquehanna lineup in check. Anthony Lippy started and worked four innings with three strikeouts. Ben Thorpe ate two innings and Braden Stinar the final 1.2 after Nate Baxter recorded his only out on strikes.

Rodriguez was plagued by walks in the fourth inning, putting a premature end to his start. Thrush came out, but was tagged for five runs on four hits in just over two innings. Even Beckwith, who got the win, struggled with the E-town offense, allowing two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.

It's big inning in the past, the Jays struggled to mount much offensively thereafter. Brian Portillo singled in the seventh and E-town got its final run in the eight, but went down in order against Jack Kinney in the ninth for his second save of the season.

Masciarelli was 2 for 4 and his three RBIs matched Susquehanna's Jenkins and Luckenbill for the game-high.

Coleman also went 2 for 4, scoring twice and driving in one. Fackler, two hits shy of tying Elizabethtown's school record of 200 in a career, walked three times, put down a sacrifice bunt and scored twice. Unfortunately, with just one official at-bat --a ground out to lead off the game-- the Harrisburg native's 12-game hitting streak expired.

Cole Luzins and Luckenbill led the River Hawks' 14-hit attack with three apiece. Luzins also scored three times and hit a sixth inning homer. Jenkins went yard for the hosts, too, with a solo shot in the fifth.

Elizabethtown returns to Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium Wednesday afternoon to face Widener at 4 p.m.
