Christy leads Blue Jays to sweep at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Mike Christy picked the right time to have his best day as a Blue Jay, as Elizabethtown needed each one of the runs he provided in a Landmark Conference sweep of Scranton Sunday afternoon.

Christy went 4 for 4 with two RBIs in a 14-10 game one victory and then hit a pair of homers, including a go-ahead solo shot in the top of the eighth inning, to lift E-town to a 9-8 extra-inning win in game two.

GAME 1
Elizabethtown 14, Scranton 10

Scranton's Connell Park is a hitter's dreamland and it played true to its reputation again on Sunday.

The Blue Jays set a new season-high with 19 hits and enjoyed their second highest scoring output of the season in outlasting the Royals, 14-10.

Elizabethtown went to the third down a pair of runs, only to post its first 10-run inning since March 19, 2016, also at Connell Park in Scranton.

The visitors put together nine straight hits with one out and finished with 10 hits in the inning. Junior Nick Lorenz provided the big blow with a 3-run home run that put the Jays ahead for the first time, 4-1.

Anthony Knight added a 2-run double, James Kantner had a run-scoring single, Kyle Fackler drove home two with a single to center and Mike Christy collected a pair of RBI hits.

The Blue Jays chased Scranton starter Anthony Caladie and reliever David Chromey from the game in the inning. Both Royal hurlers allowed five runs on five hits.

No pitcher is safe at Scranton's home park, not even reigning Landmark Pitcher of the Year, Kevin Elwell.

Though the Blue and Gray led 10-2 after the top of the third, the hosts came back and started slapping the ball all over the field in the bottom half of the inning.

Kevin Haag answered Lorenz's shot with a 3-run round-tripper of his own and by the time the dust settled, the Royals had pulled back seven runs to trail 10-9.

Miraculously, the two teams combined for 17 runs on 17 hits in the third inning alone.

Elwell battled on, however. The senior from just up the road in Clarks Summit made it through five innings to pick up his fourth win of the season.

E-town was able to pad its lead in the late going. Colby Smith hit an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI double in the seventh.

Nick Bein and Frank Ragozzino were each plunked with the bases loaded in the seventh to put the Jays up 14-9, before Scranton tacked on a late run to reach double figures.

Christy was one of five Blue Jays with multiple hits, going 4 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. All nine Elizabethtown players in the starting lineup had at least one hit.

Lorenz, Smith and Richy Masciarelli each had three hits, with Masciarelli scoring a team-high three runs.

Josh Kwak fared well in his two innings of work, allowing a lone run in registering his second save.

Chase Standen was 4 for 4 with thee runs scored for the Royals in game one, while Brad Schneider went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

GAME 2
Elizabethtown 9, Scranton 8 (F/8)

Mike Christy's lead-off solo home run in the top of the eighth inning was the difference as Elizabethtown rallied for a 9-8 win in extras to cap Sunday's sweep.

Christy was the offensive hero again, launching a pair of homers and driving in a career-high five runs, but the Blue Jays (10-7, 3-1 Landmark) needed some seventh-inning magic to set the sophomore up.

E-town trailed 8-6, but found a way to manufacture a pair of runs on Anthony Cameron's RBI single and a fielder's choice with Masciarelli batting that brought in Riley McGinley with the tying run.

Christy, who also put Elizabethtown on the board with a 3-run bomb in the third, wasted little time in the eighth, driving Casey Jacobson's delivery out to the gap in right for the eventual game-winning run.

The Blue Jays had just one home run in 15 prior games, but tripled that total in Sunday's doubleheader.

Scranton and the Jays swapped the lead four times between the third and fourth innings.

Elizabethtown took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third on Christy's homer, but the Royals (8-11, 0-5) responded with two in the bottom of the third for a 4-3 lead.

Kyle Fackler and Christy knocked in runs in the fourth and Andrew Coleman scored courtesy of an error to put E-town back in front 6-4. Again, Scranton had the answer, with run-scoring hits by Patrick O'Dell and Patrick Mergel to reclaim the lead, 7-6.

Brad Schneider's sacrifice bunt led to another run in the sixth and the Royals' lead remained two, 8-6, until Elizabethtown pushed two across in the seventh.

Jared Witner started and lasted 3.1 innings. Witner gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits and struck out two. Braden Stinar was charged with two runs allowed in 2.2 innings, while Anthony Lippy blanked Scranton over the final two innings to earn the win.

Jacobson took the loss, serving up three runs (two earned) on six hits in just under four innings. Royals' starter Kyle Bravin left after 3.1 innings of four-hit ball. He gave up six runs, though only four were earned, and walked three.

Just like in game one, where Elizabethtown outhit the Royals 19-15, both teams again registered double-digit hits. Scranton had the slight edge this time, 13-10.

Christy led the way with three knocks and Anthony Knight had two, including a double.

Chase Standen and O'Dell racked up three apiece for the Royals.
