Baseball falls at Scranton despite Lorenz homer, 14 hits

SCRANTON, Pa. -- After Sunday's doubleheader featured 57 hits between Elizabethtown and Scranton, the Blue Jays' ability to hold the Royals to seven on Monday had to feel like a minor miracle, given that only twice in the seven previous games at Connell Park had either side not registered 10 hits or more in a game.

Unfortunately, Elizabethtown's inability to come through with runners in scoring position doomed the visitors in dropping the Landmark Conference series finale, 5-3.

Nick Lorenz put the Blue Jays (10-8, 3-2 Landmark) up 1-0 with a solo home run --his second of the series-- off Sean McNamara to lead-off the second.

Scranton came back with two in the fifth on Dan Hansen's 2-run blast, but E-town quickly regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Colby Smith singled home Richy Masciarelli and reigning Landmark Athlete of the Week Mike Christy reached on an error that allowed Kyle Fackler to score the go-ahead run all with two outs.

Designated hitter Chase Standen's hot series at the dish continued in the bottom of the inning when he drove a ball up the middle to plate Patrick O'Dell and tie the score at three.

The Royals (9-11, 1-5) would strike for the winning runs in the bottom of the eighth. Kevin Haag took Nate Baxter's 0-2 pitch into right for a single that scored Anthony Simone for a 4-3 lead and the eventual winning run. Brad Schneider added an insurance run for the hosts, singling in Haag.

Though E-town starter Mike Garvey delivered a solid outing, allowing only three earned runs on five hits and striking out three in 7.1 innings, he was on the hook for the loss after his runner, Simone, scored in the bottom of the eighth.

Elizabethtown did not help its own cause offensively, going just 3 for 17 with runners in scoring position and leaving 13 men on base.

Nick Bein, Anthony Knight, Masciarelli, Frank Ragozzino and Smith recorded two hits apiece for the Jays.

Brian Markowski whiffed four and did not give up an earned run (one run total) to win in relief of McNamara. McNamara lasted into the sixth, surrendering 10 hits, but just two runs.

Elizabethtown will return to the diamond Tuesday, facing Penn State Harrisburg in a road non-conference game at 4 p.m. The game against the Lions was originally slated for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch, but has been moved back half an hour due to forecasted rain and thunderstorms late Monday night into Tuesday morning.
