E-town earns crucial Landmark win over Moravian

Results

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown strengthened its grip on second-place in the Landmark Conference standings by doubling up Moravian, 6-3, Wednesday afternoon at the Alumni Courts.

There was plenty on the line in the midweek meeting, as the Greyhounds came into the match sitting right behind the Blue Jays in the conference standings. At least four teams are still jockeying for a home semifinal match behind unbeaten Drew.

Sensing the opportunity in front of them on their home courts, the Blue Jays (8-4, 4-1 Landmark) worked hard to try and bury Moravian from the start.

Meghan Chemidlin and Lenea Riehl have only played together five times at second doubles, but with each passing match, their chemistry seems to build. Monday, they picked up an 8-1 win against Millersville and against the Hounds (7-6, 2-2) they were even better.

Chemidlin and Riehl swept Eiman Nazif and Lauren Steinert, 8-0, establishing early momentum for E-town.

Moravian had its chances to steal that momentum back, but Elizabethtown's Amber Burd and Laura Gribble stopped Kate Rennar and Emily Snyder's three-match winning streak in a tiebreaker 9-8 (4) to put the Blue Jays in front, 2-0.

E-town completed its fourth doubles sweep of the spring when Taylor Helsel and Madison McCall outlasted Brittney Eady and Skylar Oliwa, 9-7, at No. 1.

Burd and McCall ensured the match would belong to the Blue Jays by winning and fifth and second singles, respectively.

Burd downed Rennar 6-2, 6-1 and McCall got past Oliwa 6-4, 6-1 for her 53rd career singles victory, which tied her for seventh in team history with Madison Pipkin. McCall also moved into sole possession of ninth all-time with 107 career combined victories.

Riehl won for the third time in her last four matches, besting Steinert 7-5, 6-3 in a hard-fought battle at No. 4.

Elizabethtown will learn more about its postseason plans following the final weekend of Landmark Conference play. The Blue Jays host Goucher on Saturday at 1 p.m., and conclude the weekend with a 1 p.m. match against Catholic on Sunday.
