Pitchers step up as Blue Jays split with Eastern Nazarene

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Alec Miller and Mike Garvey gave Elizabethtown the strong pitching it desperately needed in Thursday's doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene. Both underclassmen turned in quality starts and the Blue Jays bounced back from a 2-1 loss in game one to salvage a split with a 9-3 victory in game two.

GAME 1
Eastern Nazarene 2, Elizabethtown 1

Alec Miller was fantastic in his first career start, limiting the Lions to five hits and two runs over six innings while striking out five.

Miller was in line for his first win for much of the afternoon after James Kantner brought home Nick Bein with a single into left field for a 1-0 E-town lead in the third.

Eastern Nazarene's first two batters singled off of Miller, but the Hempfield grad responded by striking out the next three Lions to retire the side. Miller then blew through his opponents in the second, third and fourth innings before running into a bit of trouble in the fifth.

Connor Simpson led off with a single, stole second and eventually scored the tying run on an error. Elizabethtown left fielder Mike Christy prevented Eastern Nazarene from taking the lead, however, throwing out Nick Story at the plate to end the inning.

Eastern Nazarene pitcher Alex Way limited the Jays to just three hits and finally got the extra run of support he needed in the top of the sixth. Zachary Carmody was hit bit a pitch early in the inning and two batters later, Steven Pesce tripled to right, scoring Carmody with the eventual game-winning run.

Way struck out four and walked one in the complete game victory. Miller was the tough-luck loser with five strikeouts and two runs allowed over six innings. Braden Stinar threw a scoreless seventh.

Bein, serving as the designated hitter, went 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored for the Blue Jays. Richy Masciarelli hit a two-out triple in the bottom of the sixth as E-town looked to counter the Lions' run, but Way got Christy to fly out, ending the threat.

Eastern Nazarene's Andrew Santora was the only player with a multi-hit game, going 2 for 4, as his team was held to five hits.

GAME 2
Elizabethtown 9, Eastern Nazarene 3

Sophomore righty Mike Garvey fought back from a few tough outings with his finest game of the young season and the E-town offense awoke from its game one slumber to gain the split.

Garvey scattered seven hits across seven innings in a complete game win. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.

Elizabethtown (7-3) matched its entire hit total from game one in the second inning of game two and collected a 3-0 lead in the process.

Andrew Coleman drove home Christy on a double to left to start the scoring, before rookie Riley McGinley slapped a ball into left to score Brian Portillo and Coleman.

McGinley's two-run single in the third increased the Jays' lead to 5-0 and gave him a career-high four RBIs.

The Lions (3-2) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, but E-town answered with two in the top of the fifth on a two-run single by Coleman.

The teams continued to trade runs with Eastern Nazrene adding two more in the bottom of the fifth and Nick Lorenz (double) and Portillo (sac fly) producing runs in the top of the sixth for the Blue and Gray.

Coleman and McGinley, hitting seventh and eighth, respectively, combined for four hits and seven RBIs. Christy and Portillo scored three runs apiece and E-town finished with 11 hits.
