Blue Jays drop a pair against Penn State Behrend

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Elizabethtown suffered its only sweep of Spring Break at the hands of Penn State Behrend, Friday. The Lions found a way past ace Kevin Elwell in game one, 7-5, before capturing the nightcap, 5-3.

GAME 1
Penn State Behrend 7, Elizabethtown 5

Elizabethtown grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but six runs from Behrend in the third and fourth innings proved to be the difference.

An error by Lions' catcher Ryan Hamm in the second allowed Mike Christy and Nick Lorenz to scoot home for the Blue Jays first two runs. Hamm then dropped strike three with Riley McGinley at the dish and Richy Masciarelli darted home for a 3-0 lead.

Hamm atoned for his second inning with an RBI double to center that got Behrend on the board in the third. The backstop later scored on David Boehme's RBI single, before the first of four Blue Jay errors resulted in the Lions tying the game at three.

Back-to-back fielding miscues to start the top of the fourth would come back to cost E-town.

Though the Jays should have been out of the inning when Zach Murray stepped in against Elwell, they instead only had one out. Murray got into one for a two-run triple that put Behrend ahead 5-3 and they never trailed again.

The Lions added to their lead with Murray scoring on the Blue and Gray's third error of the inning. They'd tack on one more in the sixth on Brandon Bergstrom's RBI single.

The middle of E-town's lineup was a handful for Behrend starter Jack Herzing, as they combined for seven hits in nine at-bats. Lorenz was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Christy went 2 for 3 and scored twice, and Masciarelli, bumped down from his usual spot in the two-hole, went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Christy, Lorenz and Anthony Knight each had a double for Elizabethtown, and Nick Bein drilled a pinch-hit triple to lead-off the seventh before scoring the team's final run of game one.

Herzing lasted six innings in picking up the win. He allowed nine hits and five runs, only three of which were earned. Though he yielded three walks, the 6-foot-2 senior struck out nine.

Elwell took his first defeat of the year with seven runs (three earned) given up over six frames. Elwell did not walk a batter and fanned six. Jared Witner worked a 1-2-3 seventh for his third scoreless outing in four appearances this season.

GAME 2
Penn State Behrend 5, Elizabethtown 3

Another early lead for the Blue and Gray fell by the wayside as Behrend put up two in the first and three in the third to complete the sweep.

All three of Elizabethtown's runs came in the top of the first inning.

The Jays finished their trip to Fort Pierce with a 5-4 record and are now 7-5 overall. The Lions improved to 6-5 while extending their win streak to six games.
