Elwell strong again as Blue Jays split with Moravian

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Kevin Elwell's first Landmark Conference start of the season was very much like many before it. The senior right-hander silenced Moravian for his 21st career win and 13th career complete game as the Blue Jays won game one, 6-1. The Greyhounds left Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium with a split after winning game two, 7-3.

GAME 1
Elizabethtown 6, Moravian 1

Gifted a pair of home games with Moravian's home field unfit for game action following Winter Storm Stella a few weeks back, the Blue Jays took advantage of their friendly confines to jump back in the win column and snap a three-game skid.

On a day when Kevin Elwell tied Blue Jay greats Carman Coppol and Brad Hassinger for third in career victories at the College, the senior from Clarks Summit had to be at his best.

Elwell's counterpart, Ryan Kahn, retired the side in order in each of the first three innings. The Jays' (8-7, 1-1 Landmark) ace was on his game, too, allowing only a pair of singles and a walk to the first 12 batters he faced.

Elizabethtown second baseman Kyle Fackler doubled off Kahn to start the fourth and Colby Smith drove him in on a fielder's choice for a 1-0 Blue Jays' lead.

Moravian (3-12, 1-3) capitalized on two E-town errors in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, but the Blue and Gray busted the game open with a five-run fifth.

The first five batters E-town sent to the plate in the fifth reached base and the Blue Jays seized a 6-1 lead before chasing Kahn from the game.

Nick Bein followed Brian Portillo's leadoff single with a triple to the gap in right that plated Portillo with the go-ahead run. Richy Masciarelli, Andrew Coleman and Mike Christy added RBIs later in the inning.

That was more than enough support for Elwell, who gave up just six hits --all singles-- and struck out two in seven innings to improve to 3-1 on the season and 21-9 in his career.

Though he doesn't overpower opponents, Elwell continues to stifle Landmark teams time and time again. Elwell has given up two earned runs or less in 10 of 17 starts against Landmark opponents since 2015, resulting in a 13-3 record against his conference foes.

Fackler accounted for almost half of Elizabethtown's seven hits, going 3 for 4 with a pair of runs, a double and a stolen base. The Blue Jays' five RBIs came from five different players.

No Greyhound had more than one hit against Elwell. Kahn took the loss with six runs (five earned) and five hits allowed over 4.2 innings.

GAME 2
Moravian 7, Elizabethtown 3

E-town's pitchers struggled to locate in a decisive four-run sixth inning when Moravian drew three straight walks and sent all nine batters to the plate to pull out the split.

Sophomore Jared Witner received his first career conference start and held Moravian to three runs (two earned) on seven hits over five while striking out two.

The Blue Jays trailed 3-2 heading to the top of the sixth after scoring single runs in the first and fourth innings. They would tie it on Kyle Fackler's two-out RBI single to score James Kantner.

Just like E-town had done once Moravian tied game one, the Greyhounds answered with a big inning after the Blue Jays tied game two.

Ian Csencsits drew a bases loaded walk to put Moravian back in front, 4-3. Two batters later, Evan Kulig was plunked with the bases still full. Austin Markowski capped the Hounds' four-run inning with a 2-RBI single to left.

Markowski finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs and Csencsits was 3 for 3 with three runs scored.

Moravian starting pitcher Rhett Jacoby struck out five and scattered six hits in a complete game victory.

Fackler was the lone Blue Jay to get anything going at the dish. The Harrisburg native was a home run shy of the cycle, going 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Fackler moved into a fifth-place tie on Elizabethtown's career doubles list with his 40th and took sole possession of seventh on the program's career hits list with 168.

Mike Christy (RBI), Anthony Knight and Kantner also had a hit each for the Blue Jays.

Sophomore Braden Stinar fell to 2-2 on the season as Moravian tagged him for three runs on a hit and two walks to start the sixth inning.

ON DECK
Sunday's series finale against Moravian has been postponed with no makeup date announced at this time. The Blue Jays will host Dickinson in a non-conference game Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
