Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Kopytko, defense stout in Jays dominant 15-4 win over Widener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Abby Kopytko stood tall in goal for the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon. The sophomore had a season-high in saves and the Blue Jays' defense only conceded four goals as E-town routed Widener 15-4 at Wolf Field in non-conference action.

Five different Elizabethtown (3-1) players recorded caused turnovers and that started with Allison McLamb's on Widener's (2-4) first possession of the game off the opening draw control.

McLamb forced the turnover off the stick of Kristi Rohrer and E-town went the other way with it. The Jays first clear of the game was good and Carly Thompson capped it off with her first goal of the game, assisted by Katie Thompson.

The Pride had a choice to tie it up at 1-1 minutes later, but Kopytko made her first of eight saves in the game, stopping Jamie Paren'ts free position shot.

Kelly Lynch managed to make it 1-1 at 22:35 of the first half, but Carly Thompson responded 1:29 later with her second of the game, unassisted, to give the lead right back to Elizabethtown.

The lead grew to two when Dana Robidoux found a cutting Katie Thompson and E-town went up 3-1. Shortly thereafter, Widener leading scorer Melanie Bert brought the visitors back within a goal.

From that point, with 17:00 on the clock in the first half, the Blue Jays would control the final 47 minutes of the contest.

Over the remainder of the half, both Thompsons along with Madelyn Baker and Addie Stang made it four unanswered goals going into halftime and Elizabethtown led 7-2 at the break.

Baker scored 21 seconds into the second half to extend the lead to 8-2.

Widener had opportunities throughout the second half to draw a goal closer and halt the momentum E-town had attained, but Kopytko was sharp between the pipes. She stopped four free position attempts and totaled six saves in the second half alone.

The Blue Jays added another seven goals following Baker's second of the afternoon and won handily, 15-4.

Julia Ferrante picked up a pair of second-half goals, while Carly Thompson, Stang, McLamb also tallied markers in the final 30 minutes.

McLamb and Katie Thompson each caused four turnovers. Megan DeMichele, Olivia Beachley, and Halley Donlin also helped turn over possession of the ball to E-town. In all, Widener ended with 25 turnovers while being held to less than 50 percent on clear attempts by the Blue Jays.

Katie Thompson had a team-high six points for the Jays (2g, 4a) and Stang and Carly Thompson each had four goals apiece to lead Elizabethtown.

The women's lacrosse team will head to Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, March 22.
