Lawson, spread-out scoring leads Blue Jays past Juniata

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Lydia Lawson may give up some size to the other players on the court, but the freshman's effort and work rate looms large and that was the case once again Wednesday night at Thompson Gymnasium. Lawson played big at both ends of the court in the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team's 78-54 win over Juniata. Lawson had a game-high 18 points and 7 steals while Emily Martin recorded another double-double for the Blue Jays.

Emma Hoesman broke a scoreless tie for the first points of the game with a layup. Bethany Spencer banked home a three-pointer that gave Juniata (9-13, 1-10 Landmark) its only lead of the game, which lasted just 24 seconds when Martin sank a jumper to give Elizabethtown (16-5, 6-5 Landmark) the lead back for good.

Reminiscent of the first game between the two teams, E-town shot well over the course of the first half and took a double-digit lead into the locker room. The Jays shot an even 50 percent from the floor in the first two quarters, 17-for-34, while also hitting nine of 11 foul shots. EC led 44-29 at the break.

Elizabethtown followed Lawson's lead. The Mountain Top, Pa. native robbed the Eagles of six possessions and the defense forced 14 first-half turnovers and turned them into 18 points. Lawson had ten points, including a three. Mikayla Ruth, Rachel Liszkiewicz, and Martin all had seven each.

Martin came alive in the second half after being limited to just ten minutes through two quarters due to early foul trouble. The senior nearly had her double-double in a half's time with nine points and ten boards coming in the final 20 minutes. Martin ended up with 16 and 12 in the game.

The Eagles began to pressure full court in an attempt to force E-town's hand, but Lawson and Hoesman handled that pressure and the Blue Jays' offense outscored Juniata for a second straight half and led by as many as 28 with 2:19 left in the fourth quarter.

Five players were in double figures for Elizabethtown, led by Lawson's 18 and Martin's 16. Ruth had 11 points and Hoesman and Julia Craig added 10 points each. Liszkiewicz had a career-high ten rebounds.

The women's basketball team will head out on the road for two games, starting at Goucher on Saturday, January 21.
