Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Shooting woes cost women's basketball against Moravian

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- For just the second time this season, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team shot below 30 percent from the field and fell to Moravian 66-61 in a closely contested Landmark Conference battle at Thompson Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. Julia Craig provided a spark the Blue Jays needed off the bench and scored a season-high 19 points in a losing effort.

Even though Elizabethtown (15-5, 5-5 Landmark) made just 4 of its first 22 shots from the floor in the first quarter, the game went tied 12-12 into the second. Emma Hoesman, Mikayla Ruth, and Emily Martin each had four points in the first. Hoesman and Ruth both went 2-for-2 at the foul line and the Jays' defense forced Moravian (15-6, 8-2 Landmark) into six turnovers. E-town also grabbed six offensive rebounds to keep possessions alive and help provide the plus-ten shot advantage the Blue Jays held through the first ten minutes.

The second quarter was where the Greyhounds would ultimately get the game in their hands. Morgan Calabrese gave Elizabethtown fits all game, but particularly in the second period when she led the Greyhounds with nine points, scoring as many as E-town herself. Ruth was tasked with guarding the Landmark's No. 1 scorer, Camille McPherson, and held the forward to just six first-half points.

Craig scored the last four points of the first half for the Jays, including a driving layup with 1:35 left in the second that cut the deficit to four, 25-21. Behind Calabrese, though, Moravian outscored EC 15-9 and took a 27-21 lead into halftime.

Calabrese had the Greyhounds ahead by as many as eight early on in the third quarter, but a 12-6 run over the first 3:37 resulted in the seventh tie of the contest and forced Moravian into a timeout. Hoesman nailed a three off a pass from Lydia Lawson, then Lawson took it down deep and connected on a lay-in of her own to make it 33-31. Martin blocked Karlie Brogan's layup, grabbed the rebound, and started E-town the other direction. At the other end, Hoesman found Abby Beyer for a baseline jumper and Elizabethtown was back even at 33-33.

From there, the Greyhounds came out of the timeout and ended the third quarter on their own 12-6 run and went into the fourth up 45-39. McPherson (10 points) and Calabrese (8 points) accounted for all of Moravian's third-quarter scoring.

Craig energized Elizabethtown once more early in the fourth with eight of the first ten points in the final stanza on two made three-pointers with a layup sandwiched between. Her second trey of the quarter led to the game's eighth tie and put EC level with Moravian at 49-49 with 7:19 to go.

Despite better production from the floor from the Jays, the Greyhounds were very effective from the field as well. Moravian shot 14-for-23 in the second half alone, led by McPherson's 19 points.

E-town tied it up once more with 5:53 remaining, but could never get over that hump and retake the lead. Maddie Capuano knocked down a three from the top of the key and the Greyhounds led the rest of the way. Capuano hit four straight foul shots in the final 16 seconds, including two to put Moravian ahead by five after an Elizabethtown turnover with 11 seconds to go in the fourth.

Craig's 19 points were the most she's scored in an Elizabethtown uniform this season and her six made field goals were a season-best as well. Martin had 16 points and finished a rebound shy of another double-double, with nine boards. Hoesman added 11 and five steals.

The women's basketball team will face Juniata on Wednesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium.
