Blue Jays head into playoffs with a win on senior day

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team wasn't picked to get to the Landmark Conference playoffs, but that's where they will be come Wednesday night. First, the Blue Jays had to send off their seniors, Nikki Thompson and Emily Martin, with a win in their final home game and that's what they did. E-town pulled away from Susquehanna in the fourth quarter and won 53-46.

Abby Beyer knocked down her first two shots, a three and a two-point jumper, and after Mikayla Ruth's two foul shots, Elizabethtown (18-6, 8-6 Landmark) led 9-4 over midway through the first quarter. A 7-0 run helped Susquehanna (14-11, 5-9 Landmark) supplant E-town for the lead. The River Hawks went into the second with an 11-10 lead.

Corinne Foster split a pair of foul shots in the first minute of play to tie the game at 11-11, and from there Susquehanna went on a 12-2 run to grab a ten-point lead over the Blue Jays with 4:53 left in the first half. E-town missed six straight shots until Emma Hoesman broke the scoreless drought and stopped the Hawks' streak.

The Jays defense clamped down over the final five minutes and held Susquehanna to just four points in the that span. Hoesman's bucket began a 12-0 run for the Blue Jays, capped off by Julia Craig's trey that swished through the net with exactly one minute to go in the second quarter. Craig hit two free throws with 27 seconds left in the half, but Tess Nichols drove inside and got the layup to go with 10 ticks showing. The teams went into halftime tied at 27-27.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth fight for the right to lead. A total of three ties and five lead changes, though the River Hawks took a one-point edge to the fourth, 38-37. Nichols opened up the third quarter with a bucket to give Susquehanna a brief two-point lead, but the first tie of the quarter came two possessions later when Hoesman drove to the hoop and got fouled. The junior knocked down both free throws.

Susquehanna led by as many as three in the third thanks to a three from Rachel Sweger and layup by Maddie Murray. Craig erased the deficit with another trey, her second of the game, to make it 34-34. Beyer had the Jays up 37-35, but Nichols' and-one with six seconds left in the third gave the visitors the lead going into the final period.

E-town finally got in sync in the fourth quarter, though Susquehanna was not about to let the game get away. Martin and Beyer helped restore the lead to Elizabethtown with a jumper and two foul shots, but Sweger's three put the River Hawks back in front.

Some quick passing around Susquehanna's zone defense led to Beyer finding Ruth cutting to the bucket and knocking down the layup. Minutes later, with the Jays ahead 47-44, Beyer found Ruth down low in similar fashion to the earlier basket. Ruth's made shot put Elizabethtown up five, 49-44, with 2:28 remaining in regulation. Ruth essentially locked up the game for the home team as Beyer found her for the third time in the quarter.

Lydia Lawson canned two late free throws and E-town held on for a 53-46 win.

Thompson started the game and played for the first time in ten games. Martin wound up with eight points and 14 rebounds to go along with five steals and four blocks. Her third block of the game, at 6:35 of the third, put her into sole possession of first on the all-time career blocks list. Beyer had a game-high 16 points while Ruth added 13.

The women's basketball team will travel back to Washington, D.C. to face top-seeded and nationally-ranked Catholic in a Landmark Conference semifinal. The start time is yet to be determined.
