Martin's triple-double not enough to get Blue Jays past Cardinals in Landmark semifinal

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Seven days ago in the same gym, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team took it on the chin at the hands of nationally-ranked Catholic. Wednesday night in a Landmark Conference semifinal, the Blue Jays gave the Cardinals all they could handle in a 60-56 overtime loss. Emily Martin recorded her first career triple-double in the defeat.

Catholic (23-3), still in the top 25 in the latest WBCA Division III poll, put the Jays into an early 10-0 hole after just three minutes. Elizabethtown (18-7) collected itself and outscored the Cardinals 13-4 over the final seven minutes and trailed by just a point going into the second.

E-town had issues keeping Catholic off the offensive glass and the Cardinals cashed in on their 12 first-half offensive rebounds. CUA had 13 second-chance points through the first 20 minutes, but after halftime, they did not record any more.

Martin hit the first two buckets for the Blue Jays in the second quarter, though the only problem was they came over three minutes apart. Catholic extended its one-point lead to six after Payton Smith's layup. Martin's jumper got E-town back within four at 21-17.

Rachel Liszkiewicz knocked down a three with 1:28 left in the second as Elizabethtown closed the deficit to a single possession. Michelle DeSantis responded with a three with the half winding down and Catholic took a 28-22 lead.

Martin came alive in the third quarter with eight points after scoring eight in the first half. After another trey from DeSantis that had the Cardinals up by seven, Martin and Mikayla Ruth helped drive the Jays back closer. The two combined for 12 points the remainder of the quarter and Ruth's jumper gave E-town its first lead of the game at 43-41 heading into the fourth.

Neither team led by more than two points the entirety of the fourth with five lead changes, including a few late in the quarter. Lydia Lawson came up with a steal with 1:33 to go and later in the Jays' possession, she found Ruth for a jumper to put EC up 51-50 with 1:18 remaining. Back at the other end, Melissa Errico laid the ball in for two and shot Catholic back in front.

A late miss by the Jays with 14 seconds left led to Megan Stafford shooting two shots at the foul. She missed the first, then made the second. After an Elizabethtown timeout to advance the ball, Lawson dished to Martin out by the left elbow. In rhythm, Martin put the ball on the floor and drove hard to the basket. She banked home her shot with three ticks left and forced overtime.

DeSantis opened the scoring in the overtime with another three to put Catholic ahead by three, 56-53. Martin hit one of her two free throws, but Emma Hoesman sank a pair and the game was knotted back up, 56-56 with 2:20 left. DeSantis' layup was good with 51 seconds left and after an E-town turnover and a missed jumper, DeSantis was at the line with eight seconds remaining for two shots. She sank both to all but seal the game for the Cardinals.

E-town's desperation three as time wound down was no good and Catholic ran out the clock to advance to Saturday's championship game where they will host No. 2 seed Scranton.

The Blue Jays, the four-seed in the Landmark tournament, were picked fifth in the preseason poll.

Martin left it all on the court for Elizabethtown with her first career triple-double. She ended with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 blocked shots. Ruth added 17 points and hit all five foul shots. DeSantis led Catholic with 20 points.
