Blue Jays clinch playoff spot despite loss at No. 24 Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Nationally-ranked Catholic has been the team to beat in the Landmark Conference this season, and though the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team was able to upset nationally-ranked Scranton on the road last month, the same result did not occur for the Blue Jays Wednesday night against the Cardinals. The conference's No. 1 team beat E-town 72-49, but with Susquehanna and Drew losing as well, the Jays clinched the fourth spot in the Landmark playoffs.

Elizabethtown (17-6, 7-6 Landmark) missed its first six shots of the night, but luckily Catholic (21-3, 12-1 Landmark) started off a bit cold as well. Though, once the Cardinals got the offense in gear, the seven-point hole E-town was in with 2:12 left in the first quarter looked even tougher to get out of there on out.

Emily Martin had eight first-half points and Julia Craig added five off the bench, but Catholic shot 14-for-26 from the field (53.8%) and had four players with at least five points through the first two quarters. The Cardinals led 37-26 at the half.

The lead remained in double digits through the third quarter. Lydia Lawson's jumper with 5:13 to go in the third got E-town within 11 and another bucket away from closing that gap to single digits, but the Cardinals' shooters did not cool off in the second half. A last-second layup by Michelle DeSantis to end the third put the Jays in a 15-point hole entering the fourth.

In the matchup earlier in the season, Elizabethtown had trailed Catholic at home by double figures and managed to come back to make it a game before the Cardinals pulled away at the very end. Wednesday night did not go that way for E-town. Catholic shot an even 50 percent over the course of the third and fourth quarters (14-for-28).

Martin and Craig were the only Blue Jays to post double digits. Martin had a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds while Craig finished with 10.

Payton Smith led the Cardinals with 14 points and three treys.

The women's basketball team will host Susquehanna on Senior Day, this Saturday at 2 p.m. They will go on to face the winner of Saturday's Catholic/Moravian matchup next Wednesday in a Landmark Conference semifinal game.
