Goucher holds off men's basketball 77-65

TOWSON, Md. -- Connor Moffatt scored a season-high 18 points and was good on all eight of his shots, but Goucher avenged its loss at Elizabethtown last month with a 77-65 victory over the Blue Jays Saturday afternoon.

Moffatt may have caught the Gophers by surprise after only playing 11 minutes in the Jays' 70-62 win back on Jan. 21. The freshman and Hempfield product went 6 for 6 for 13 points in the first half, allowing Elizabethtown (5-17, 2-10 Landmark) to keep pace.

Goucher led in the opening minutes, but the Gophers got stuck on 12 points after Chris Outing's layup with 14:15 left in the half and the Blue Jays took advantage.

Peter Harding's 3-pointer at 11:48 put E-town up for the first time, 15-12. The Blue and Gray would extend that lead to 18-12 on Josh Eden's traditional 3-point play shortly thereafter.

While Elizabethtown held an advantage for much of the final 10 minutes of the first half, the Gophers struck last on Dwayne Morton's three with 32 seconds left to take a 38-37 lead at the break.

It was Goucher's start to the second, however, that spelled trouble for the Jays.

Matt Lapkowicz briefly put Elizabethtown back in front with a triple on the opening possession of the second, but from there, Goucher ran off 14 straight points to seize control.

Following Lapkowicz's bucket, the Blue Jays scored just four points over the next 9:16. E-town trailed by double digits for much of the remainder of the game and got no closer than seven after Eden converted another 3-point play with 3:46 to go.

Moffatt was a marked man after halftime, but still hit both of his field goal attempts to finish 8 of 8 from the floor and 2 of 3 at the charity stripe. He's reached double figures in two of his last four games since being inserted into the starting lineup. The Hempfield product also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Eden also had 18 points and Harding 11. Though they cooled a bit in the second half, the Blue Jays still shot a respectable 42.6 percent overall (26 of 61) and only turned it over 13 times. Elizabethtown was held to 4 of 14 shooting from downtown.

Outing had a monster game for the Gophers (5-18, 2-10) going for 24 points and 15 rebounds, both game-highs. Keon Butler had 18 points, Jesse Mondry 14 and Tre Galloway III 13 to give Goucher four starters in double figures.

Goucher held a 39-32 edge on the glass and shot well for a majority of the afternoon. The Gophers connected on 51.9 percent of their shots (27 of 52) and got to the foul line 26 times, making 17.

Elizabethtown concludes the season with a pair of home games this coming week. The Blue Jays will welcome Catholic on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and hold Senior Day a week from today against Susquehanna at 4 p.m.
