Catholic muscles way past Blue Jays 70-60

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown matched or bettered playoff-bound Catholic in nearly every category Wednesday night, with one glaring exception. The Cardinals made their way to the foul line 25 times, converting 21, to avoid an upset at the hands of the Blue Jays, 70-60, at Thompson Gymnasium.

The Cardinals came into the game ninth in Division III in free throws made (443), 23rd in attempts (602) and 66th in free throw percentage (73.6) and their athleticism paid dividends in the form of 15 second-half attempts.

Elizabethtown (5-18, 2-11 Landmark) competed for 40 minutes, outscoring Catholic 32-30 in the second half. Bryce Greene got hot during a 3-minute, 42-second stretch in which he scored eight of his 12 points and Peter Harding followed with a three to pull the Blue Jays back within seven, 55-48, with 10:32 remaining.

The Blue Jays would get no closer, though it was a single-digit game into the final minutes.

Josh Eden led all Elizabethtown players with 14 points and 11 rebounds, his sixth double-double of the season. Harding (13) and Greene were also in double figures for the Blue and Gray.

Jay Howard, a returning NABC All-District and All-Landmark First Team pick, powered his way to 18 points, eight boards and three blocks for the victorious Cards (17-7, 9-4). Howard went 5 of 9 from the floor and 8 of 11 at the foul line. Teammate Louis Khouri made all six of his free throws and hit a team-high three 3-pointers for 17 points.

Reserve big man Riley Hayes played a critical role for CUA Wednesday, hauling in a game-high 12 rebounds, scoring eight points and going 4 of 4 at the charity stripe.

E-town shot 35.4 percent (23 of 65) overall, right in line with Catholic's 35.5 percent (22 of 62). The two teams each committed 13 turnovers and recorded five blocks. The difference was at the foul line, where Catholic went 21 of 25. Elizabethtown shot an honorable 87.5 percent at the line, but only got their eight times and was outscored by 14.

Catholic also held a 47-38 advantage on the glass, leading to 16 second chance points.

Elizabethtown concludes the regular season with a home game Saturday against 15th-ranked Susquehanna. Prior to the game the Blue Jays will honor their six seniors: John Bush, Eden, Harding, Matt Lapkowicz, Brian Lukacsy and Jake Sweger, along with outgoing head coach Bob Schlosser, who is retiring after 27 seasons and 686 games.
