Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Beyer fuels fourth straight win for Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Now in the final month of the regular season, every game becomes that much more important, especially for an Elizabethtown College women's basketball team fighting to get into the Landmark Conference playoffs. The Blue Jays took another step toward that goal with a 69-54 win over Drew, led by Abby Beyer's first career double-double. Mikayla Ruth also provided a double-double for E-town and Emily Martin finished one rebound shy of making it three. The win gave the Jays sole possession of fourth in the league.

Through the first quarter, Elizabethtown (15-4, 5-4 Landmark) jumped all over their visitors from Madison, N.J. Beyer got off to a hot start with seven points and six boards in the first alone. Martin had six of her 13 and the two combined to outscore Drew (8-12, 4-5 Landmark) 13-6. E-town led 17-6 going into the second quarter.

The Jays' defense did a number on the Rangers' offense. Drew shot made just three of its first 20 shots from the floor and were down as many as 16 in the second quarter. Beyer nearly had her first career double-double by halftime, with 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting and nine rebounds.

In the first matchup, Drew was able to stifle the Blue Jays on offense, but this time around, Elizabethtown was well prepared to attack. The ball whizzed around the floor like a hot potato and the Jays' shooters were able to knock down their shots.

The sizzling start did not roll over into the second half, and despite a woeful shooting first half, the Rangers finished the game with a better percentage from the floor than the Blue Jays. Elizabethtown did its damage in the second half from the foul line, going 23-for-25 (92 percent) after missing all four attempts in the first 20 minutes.

E-town dominated the glass and wound up with 18 second-chance points. The Jays nearly split even in the rebounding department with 26 defensive rebounds to 24 offensive boards. They ended with a 50-30 edge in rebounds in the game. On four separate possessions in the third quarter alone, Elizabethtown was able to add points to the lead because of crashing the offensive glass.

Drew got as close as 12 in the fourth quarter, but Lydia Lawson hit all six of her free throw attempts and Jill Freeman also connected on a pair late in the game. Beyer finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Ruth had 16 points and 12 boards. Martin added 13 points and 9 rebounds. Lawson was the fourth to hit double figures with 11.

Hannah Miller had a game-high 22 points for the Rangers.

Elizabethtown will host Moravian on Saturday, February 4 with a 2 p.m. start time.
