Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Beyer, Lawson help women's basketball clip Ospreys

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- For the second straight night, Abby Beyer was feeling it from beyond the arc. A night after sinking a career-high six treys, Beyer had four for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team in a lopsided 71-49 win over Stockton in non-conference action Saturday evening at Thompson Gymnasium. Beyer was one of three players in double figures for the Blue Jays and tied for a game-high with Lydia Lawson with 16 points.

Elizabethtown (7-3) was giving up some height to Stockton (6-5), but the Blue Jays still managed to out-rebound the Ospreys on the night, 56-48. E-town was able to get two of Stockton's top players in foul trouble in the first quarter and took advantage.

Sasha Williams, a three-time conference Defensive Player of the Year for Stockton, found Hailee Porricelli for the game's opening points, and for 58 seconds the Ospreys led the Jays. When Beyer drained her first of four threes in the game, Stockton never regained the lead back from E-town.

Emma Powell doubled Elizabethtown's lead from three to six with a three-point play. Lawson dished inside to Powell, who took contact and made the bucket. Her ensuing foul shot swished through the netting and EC led 12-6 with 3:49 left in the first quarter. Marissa Emlet gave E-town its biggest lead of the quarter on the fast break after Emma Hoesman found the sophomore for the basket.

Stockton cut the deficit to five by the end of the quarter and trailed 15-10 going into the second.

Lawson extended the lead to nine with two layups on the break and forced the Ospreys into an early second-quarter timeout. Out of the timeout, Lea Mendolla drilled a three and a few possessions later Porricelli knocked down a three of her own and Stockton was back within three, 19-16. Porricelli had SU within a basket with 5:05 left in the half after converting the and-one, but it was the final points of the half for Stockton. The Elizabethtown defense held the Ospreys to 0-for-5 shooting the remaining 5:05 and forced four turnovers.

Meanwhile, the defense turned to offense and Beyer led an 11-0 run to end the second quarter for the Blue Jays with a pair of treys and accounted for eight of the 11. E-town led 32-19 at halftime behind 11 points from Beyer.

Mikayla Ruth helped E-town keep up the pace with six third-quarter points. Lawson and Beyer each added five in the quarter and Veronica Christ had the other four points as the Jays outscored Stockton for the third consecutive quarter and led 52-34 after three periods. EC led by as many as 18 twice, both times after made shots by Christ, who finished in double digits for the fifth straight game off the bench.

Rachel Liszkiewicz put Elizabethtown up by 20 on the first possession of the fourth. Emlet found a cutting Liszkiewicz, who laid the ball in easily as the defense was caught up high. The Blue Jays led by 20-plus for about half the quarter before the Ospreys cut into the lead.

Once Ashley Reynolds grabbed an offensive board and put it back up, E-town led by 20 or more the rest of the game. Reynolds hauled in a missed three, battled in the low post for position and went up strong for the deuce.

Jill Freeman had the Jays up by 24 for the third time in the quarter late in the game after Brittany Ritter found Freeman down low for the lay-in.

Elizabethtown held Sasha Williams scoreless for the first time this season. NJAC Player of the Week Najha Treadwell led the Ospreys with a team-high 13 points before fouling out. E-town handled the points off turnovers battle with a 25-5 advantage. The Jays also finished with more points in the paint (36-34), second chance points (17-8), fast break points (10-2), and bench points (25-10).

Beyer and Lawson each put up 16 points to lead Elizabethtown. Christ added 11 off the bench. Hoesman finished with a game-high 12 rebounds and Christ had five steals.

The women's basketball team will travel to face Cabrini at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 3.
