Montclair State holds off Blue Jays 67-56

MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Montclair State used an 11-2 run late in the first half to take a double-digit lead into the half and held Elizabethtown at bay in the second to secure a 67-56 victory over the Blue Jays in the opening round of the Gelston/Paskert Holiday Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Jays quickly erased a 12-point Red Hawks lead midway through the second half as Bryce Greene hit a pair of 3-pointers and Brandon Berry scored five points during a 13-2 run.

Berry's 3-pointer with 6:07 remaining pulled E-town within 49-48, but the Jays missed on a pair of chances to go in front and Montclair State (7-3) scored the next four points to go up by five.

Montclair State came into Thursday's game with the 22nd most free throw attempts (254) in the country, but connecting on only 65.7% of those attempts.

That number wouldn't hold true against the Jays (3-7). Myles Mitchell-White went 8-for-8 and the Red Hawks missed just one of 18 attempts, including going a perfect 10-for-10 in the final five minutes.

Greene led the Blue and Gray in scoring for the sixth time this season with 16 points. The sophomore guard made 6-of-15 shots (4-of-11 3FG) and added six rebounds. Junior guard Michael Pastore joined Greene in double figures with 10 points.

The Red Hawks held Connor Moffatt, E-town's second-leading scorer at 17.2 points per game, to four points on 2-of-10 shooting. Moffatt remained strong on the boards with a team-high nine rebounds.

Berry had nine points and five rebounds for the Jays, and Ethan DuBois had eight points and four assists.

Elizabethtown, which shot a season-low 35.7% (20-of-56), took its only lead, 3-2, on Greene's 3-pointer 2:07 into the game.

Jovanni Chatham did not miss a shot for the hosts on his way to a team-high 16 points. Chatham went 5-of-5 from the floor, 2-of-2 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Mitchell-White had 12 points, six boards and five assists for the Red Hawks and Jarrett Bogus added 10 points.

Montclair State will face Manhattanville, a 91-81 winner over Nazareth (N.Y.) in Friday's championship game at noon. The Blue Jays take on Nazareth in the consolation game, which follows at 2 p.m.
