Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Reynolds, Lawson key Blue Jays' win over Moravian

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The coaches of the Landmark Conference voted Moravian to be the top dog this season, but it was the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team that topped the preseason favorite Saturday afternoon in the first Landmark game of the season at Thompson Gymnasium. Lydia Lawson and Ashley Reynolds both recorded season-highs in the 74-68 win for E-town.

Moravian (5-2, 0-1 Landmark) was missing its top scorer and the Landmark's second-leading scorer Camille McPherson for the game. Maddie Capuano and Nadine Ewald stepped up for the Greyhounds as neither team led by more than four during the first two quarters. Capuano and Ewald combined to score the first ten points of the game for Moravian.

The Greyhounds spent most of the first quarter in the lead, but the Blue Jays wouldn't let Moravian pull away. Lawson hit a jumper early on to tie the game, the first of 14 ties in Saturday's Landmark affair. Emma Hoesman gave Elizabethtown (4-2, 1-0 Landmark) a 4-2 lead and Reynolds put the Jays up by four two possessions later.

Ewald made it a two-point game before Capuano hit her first of three treys in the game after Karlie Brogan created a turnover and the Landmark Athlete of the Week, Capuano, finished off the play with a three.

There were five more ties the remainder of the first quarter, but back-to-back layups by Ewald and Julia Sirotnak gave Moravian a three-point advantage going into the second.

Lawson's basket in deep was good to start the quarter and Veronica Christ, the third player in double figures for E-town, drained a three on the next possession to give the lead back to the Jays at 23-21.

A 6-0 run saw the Greyhounds return to the lead, but Christ split a pair of free throws and Abby Beyer connected on her lone trey of the game to tie the score once again, at 27-27.

Ewald looked to have given Moravian a slim lead before the break, but E-town went right back down the floor with 13 seconds left in the first half to knot up the score at 33-33, coming on Christ's layup. Lawson found the freshman streaking toward the basket after the inbounds pass was delivered to point guard.

Reynolds made her mark on the game in the third, with eight points and eight of her game and season-high 15 rebounds to give the freshman her first career double-double, which is what the Jays are used to from the No. 21 jersey.

Marissa Emlet had converted one of Moravian's 25 turnovers, which tied a season-high for the visitors, into two points that put EC up by four with 2:21 left in the third. Ewald slashed the lead in half on the ensuing possession with a jumper from the foul line, two of her 19 points.

Christ's layup on the Jays' next possession didn't go, but Reynolds was there for the board. She followed up her own miss with a second offensive rebound, drew the contact, and made the bucket with a chance for the and-one. Reynolds sank the free throw to put E-town ahead by five, its largest lead of the game to that point.

The Blue Jays hit the boards on the final possession of the third quarter, as Christ slid in to snatch an offensive rebound to retain possession for Elizabethtown. Reynolds grabbed a second offensive board and was fouled going back up. She hit another two foul shots and stretched the lead to seven.

Capuano forced the issue to end the third and was fouled on a jumper with a second to go. She made both free throws and Moravian trailed by five going into the final quarter, 54-49.

Christ had the opening points of the quarter for the Jays to reestablish a five-point lead for E-town. Then, Lawson deflected a pass and jumped on the loose ball and went the other way, drawing the foul on the fast break. She hit both free throws and pushed toward her career-high of 24 points and EC led by seven early in the fourth. A minute and a half later, Lawson gave the Blue Jays their first double-digit lead of the game, at ten, with her second trey of the game.

Reynolds buried a three off another of Moravian's turnovers and the lead remained at ten, 66-56, with 5:56 left in regulation.

Christ delivered the ultimate dagger with 2:35 to go, hitting her second three-pointer of the game that extended the lead to 11, 72-61.

The Greyhounds were able to close the gap in the final two minutes, getting as close as six on Ewald's layup off an inbounds down low. Hoesman stuck to Capuano and did not allow an easy shot for Moravian's leading scorer in the game. Moravian went scoreless the final 50 seconds. Capuano finished with a team-high 23 points.

Lawson finished a point shy of tying her career-high of 24 with 23 points on 9-for-15 shooting. She also added six steals and five assists, both game highs. Reynolds best game of the season turned into 20 points and 15 rebounds (9 def., 6 off.,). Christ contributed 11 off the bench and grabbed five rebounds.

Elizabethtown will have Sunday off before taking on Gettysburg at Thompson Gymnasium on Monday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.
