Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Christ, Blue Jays overwhelm Gettysburg in win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Coming off a big win over the weekend, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team kept the momentum going Monday night. E-town dialed up the defense to hold Gettysburg to a season-low in points to knock the Bullets from the ranks of the unbeatens and won its fourth consecutive game, 77-54. Veronica Christ led the Blue Jays with 18 points off the bench, the fourth different leading scorer for Elizabethtown in seven games.

It was the Elizabethtown (5-2) defense that set the tone for this game in the first quarter. The Blue Jays forced 11 turnovers and turned them into nine points. E-town also had an 18 to 8 advantage in shot attempts in the quarter and led 18-7 after one. Ashley Reynolds got off to a quick start offensively for the Jays, scoring seven first-quarter points, including a three.

Teal Tasker got the rebound off her own missed layup to start the second and on the put-back, was fouled, and made the basket. Her free throw attempt was good and Gettysburg (5-1) was back within eight in the first 22 seconds. Tasker hit a jumper the next time down and cut the lead to six.

Abby Beyer elevated Elizabethtown's lead back up to double digits with the unconventional three-point play. For the eighth time this season, Beyer was fouled in the act of shooting a three. She stepped up and knocked down all three shots and E-town led 24-14 with 7:28 left in the second.

Christ put her stamp on the game in the second, with seven of her game-high 18 coming in the second ten-minute period. Her trey was the first points of the quarter for the Blue Jays. Later in the quarter, she used her long arms to block a shot from behind, gather the defensive rebound, and on the other end, knock down a jumper that kept E-town's lead at ten.

A quick 5-0 run had the Bullets back within five, but Emma Powell's nixed the run with a layup at the 1:59 mark on a feed from Marissa Emlet, who had a team-high four assists.

Ashley Gehrin split a pair of foul shots with 1:15 to go. Powell grabbed the rebound off the second attempt and down the floor went the Jays. Beyer found Christ in the left corner and the freshman connected on her third field goal of the quarter to make it 30-22.

After a pair of free throws from preseason All-American Emily Gibbons, Beyer dropped in a three to end the first half on Lydia Lawson's assist. E-town went into the half ahead 33-24.

Elizabethtown's up-tempo style began to really pay off in the second half as they wore Gettysburg down. Lawson ran the show and three Jays scored double-digit points over the final 20 minutes of play.

Lawson, the reigning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, had ten points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor, including a three-pointer and a foul shot. 11 of Christ's points came in the second half and Mikayla Ruth poured in 15.

The Bullets didn't go away early, however. Kendra Meredith's layup midway through the third had Gettysburg at its closest to E-town at 33-29, but by the end of the quarter, Elizabethtown had its lead blossom to 11 thanks to Lawson's three-point play. Lawson, Christ, and Ruth combined to score 17 of the Jays' 19 third-quarter points.

The trio also took over the fourth quarter and helped the Blue Jays outscored Gettysburg 25-13. Ruth had a team-best nine fourth-quarter points, while Lawson and Christ had five each. Powell added four.

E-town pushed the lead up to 19 with an 8-0 run to start the fourth, which was kicked off by five quick points from Lawson. Christ concluded the run with an and-one and the Jays led 60-41 with 6:19 to go.

Elizabethtown flirted with a 20-point lead for three minutes until Ruth put them over the mark and kept them there with a pair of free throws and a trey.

The Blue Jays shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and hit 8-of-9 free throws and finished 13-for-14 from the charity stripe. The 21-0 disparity in points off turnovers was a key to E-town's win. Lawson and Christ each had three steals in the victory.

Christ totaled her 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting, 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Ruth's 15 points came on five field goals, a three, and four free throws. Lawson was efficient from the floor, finishing 6-for-7.

After a six-day stretch and 3-0 record in that span, the women's basketball team will have 12 days before their next game. The Blue Jays stay within the Centennial Conference when they travel to face Muhlenberg on Saturday, December 16 at 2 p.m.
