Hornets sting Blue Jays in overtime

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Brandon Berry's three had Elizabethtown up seven late in Tuesday night's non-conference matchup with visiting Shenandoah. The Blue Jays struggled to ice away the game and Shenandoah worked its way back and forced overtime at Thompson Gymnasium. The Hornets outscored E-town 11-7 in the overtime period to escape with a four-point non-league win, 94-90. Connor Moffatt led the Jays with a career-high 28 points.

The long ball was falling early and often for both sides. Moffatt initiated the scoring with his first of two treys in the game and one of Elizabethtown's (3-6) season-high 14 made three-pointers in the game. Berry hit his second in the span of a minute and a half after coming in off the bench, which gave the Blue Jays its largest lead of eight with 13:01 to go in the first half.

E-town was able to keep it a three-possession game until later in the first half. Alan Dabny dropped in a three with 2:29 remaining that cut the Hornet's deficit to two, 33-31. Aaron Patterson, one of two players for SU with at least 20 points, brought the Hornets within one twice in the last 2:05, but the Jays held on to the slim lead as Moffatt took a feed down low from Ethan DuBois and Elizabethtown went into the half up by a bucket, 38-36.

While the Blue Jays' defense held Shenandoah's (6-3) leading scorer Kwa McDonald below his season average, Jonah Meredith took over in the second half for the visitors, scoring 16 of his team-high 24 points after the break.

As he started and ended the first half, Moffatt scored and pushed the lead to four early in the second half, though Meredith had it tied up two possession later for SU at 40-40, one of 11 ties in the game. No lead was safe for either side as the teams switched who was in front 11 times in the game. With the hot three-point shooting, the game was headed to a close finish.

After leading by just a point, DuBois and Moffatt hit back-to-back treys that extended the lead to five, 71-66, with 4:42 left in the game. Bryce Greene, the reigning Landmark Athlete of the Week, sank a three to make it a six-point lead. Every time Shenandoah came back, Elizabethtown was able to answer with a basket. Michael Pastore dished to Berry to keep the lead at five with just over three minutes showing on the clock. Berry was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor after his layup. The two connected again a few possessions later, this time resulting in Berry's three-pointer. Pastore assisted on three straight Jays' field goals.

Berry's three had the Blue Jays up seven with 1:46 remaining in regulation. Made free throws by the Hornets and some misses by E-town helped Shenandoah close the gap and get back into the game. Down the stretch Meredith was the go-to guy for SU. His layup with a little over a minute made it a three-point game. After a missed free throw by the Jays, Meredith got inside for another two points. An E-town split at the line meant it was just 82-80 with 34 seconds left. Meredith drove again and drew the foul. He missed his first, but canned the second.

Elizabethtown inbounded the ball and Shenandoah hustled to foul and stop the clock. Another split at the line had the score at 83-81 with 25 seconds remaining. Who else but Meredith on the ball. He drove yet again and got the layup to fall to tie the game at 83-83 as the game needed overtime to decide a winner.

Meredith and Christian Meredith each scored four points in the OT period. Christian Meredith's only field goal of the overtime was of major importance. Tied at 90-90 after Moffatt knotted the back up and under a minute to go, he sank a contested three from the left wing to put Shenandoah ahead by three with 30 seconds to go.

Greene couldn't get a three to fall on E-town's next possession, but Moffatt hustled in for the board and the Jays called timeout to salvage the offensive possession. Another three-point attempt wouldn't go and a foul with 1.2 seconds left little hope. Christian Meredith missed the first foul shot, but sank the second and the Hornets were able to get out of Thompson Gym with a 94-90 win.

Moffatt grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with his 28 points for his seventh double-double in nine games. Greene was over 20 points once again, dropping in 23 and a team-high four treys. Jonah Meredith led Shenandoah with 24 points and Aaron Patterson registered 20 for the Hornets.

The men's basketball team will participate in Montclair State's Gelston/Paskert Holiday Tournament, beginning Thursday, December 28 at 3 p.m. with a matchup with the hosts, Montclair State.
