Jays escape Eastern at the buzzer

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Wednesday night's non-conference matchup with Eastern came down to the last shot and last second of the game. Amber Anderson's potential buzzer-beater clanged off the rim as time expired and the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team opened its home schedule with a 57-56 win over the Eagles. Four players for the Blue Jays reached double figures for the third time this season.

Both teams started out cold from the floor, combining to hit just eight of the first 28 shot attempts (29 percent). Taylor Price scored the first bucket of the game for Eastern (0-5) and the Eagles led 2-0 for just over four minutes until Ashley Reynolds hit Elizabethtown's (3-2) first shot of the game on a layup. Abby Beyer found the freshman for the two-point basket.

Marissa Emlet hit a pair of treys in the opening quarter, including a three-pointer with only ten seconds left in the first. The sophomore recorded a career-high 12 points in the game and was one of the four to reach double digits for E-town.

The six-point lead the Jays had after the first quarter dissipated quickly as the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to begin the second. Price hit a jumper after Taylor Azer came up with a steal that gave Eastern the lead back. Regie Robinson hit two foul shots to extend the lead to three, 18-15, with 6:52 left in the quarter.

The Blue Jays shot far better in the second quarter and were right back in the game. Mikayla Ruth and Lydia Lawson hit back-to-back threes to shift the score back in favor of Elizabethtown, 23-21.

There were three ties over the next two minutes as the teams went back and forth. Lawson and Ruth helped the Jays get the lead back to four with 1:01 remaining. Beyer found Ruth for a layup that gave E-town a 31-27 advantage. They would take that score into the locker room.

Reynolds had the first points of the third for the Blue Jays, but Eastern chipped away and eventually took the lead back midway through the quarter. Elizabethtown's shooting struggles returned for the third quarter, as the Jays hit just two of 14 shots. They were able to remain close by knocking down eight of ten foul shots in the third period alone, including a 3-for-3 effort from Ruth. Her and-one toward the end of the quarter put EC back in front heading to the fourth.

Lawson picked off a pass on the Eagles' opening possession of the fourth and went the length of the floor for the fast break layup. Two possessions later, Lawson came away with the theft again, which ended in a lay-in for Emlet that put the Jays up by five, 47-42.

Price and Robinson, Eastern's two leading scorers, got the Eagles back in it after orchestrating an 8-0 run for the visitors.

After Reynolds and Emlet combined for the next six points for Elizabethtown, the Jays were deep into their offensive possession with less than two minutes to go. Emma Hoesman drove into the lane and drew the defense to her. She passed out to Lawson on the left wing, unguarded. The sophomore set her foot and knocked down the mid-range jumper to give EC a four-point edge, 55-51 with 1:40 to go.

Robinson got inside for a basket to cut it to two, but Ruth's drive to the hoop resulted in a foul and a pair of foul shot attempts with 57 seconds left. She hit both and finished a perfect 5-for-5 on the night. The freebies were huge as Price would come out of a timeout and hit a big trey to bring it back to a one-point deficit.

E-town couldn't find points on its final possession and Eastern had the ball with less than 15 seconds on the clock. Price drove at the defense as the Jays doubled on the Eagles' leading scorer in the game. That left an unguarded player out near the three-point line. The shot went up in time, but as the buzzer rang, the ball bounced off the rim and Elizabethtown escaped with the one-point non-conference victory.

Ruth led the Jays with 16 points and has been in double figures each game this season. Emlet provided 12 points off the bench, while Lawson and Reynolds each added 11.

The Jays forced 15 turnovers and turned them into 13 points, compared to just four for Eastern. E-town also hit 15 of 21 foul shots. Eastern was just eight of 14.

The women's basketball team will play its first Landmark Conference game of the season this Saturday, December 2 at 4 p.m. when Moravian visits Thompson Gym.
