Hot shooting leads Blue Jays to fourth straight win over Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had won three straight over Lebanon Valley dating back to the 2013-14 season. Wednesday evening, the Blue Jays enjoyed a breakout offensive barrage at Sorrentino Gym and handed the Dutchmen an 80-62 non-conference loss, backed by a game-high 22 points from Abby Beyer. It was E-town's fourth consecutive victory over Leb. Val.

Beyer wasn't the only player for Elizabethtown (2-2) to have the shooting touch on Wednesday. Lydia Lawson, Mikayla Ruth, and Marissa Emlet each shot at least 50 percent of those players with at least five shot attempts.

E-town found itself down 6-0 in the first minute and a half, but Beyer connected on three foul shots to cut it in half and get the Jays going. Emma Hoesman found Ruth for her first points of the night and the first of nine assists for the senior guard, which set a new single-game career-best.

Beyer hit three of her team-high five treys in the first quarter and scored 11 of the first 15 points for Elizabethtown. Lawson hit a three of her own late in the quarter and E-town trailed 21-19 after one.

Veronica Christ came in off the bench and recorded the first four points of the second quarter to give the Blue Jays the lead, 23-21. Marissa Emlet pushed the run to 6-0 with a layup.

Lebanon Valley (2-2) closed it to one, but from there, Elizabethtown began to pull away behind its hot shooting. The Jays shot 7-for-7 from the foul line in the first two quarter combined and were 8-for-18 from beyond the arc over the first 20 minutes. Back-to-back threes from Lawson and Beyer took a four-point lead for EC up to eight (after Veronica Venezia's jumper). Lawson got the Jays to double digits for the first time in the game, taking the ball coast-to-coast for the lay-in with less than a minute to go off a defensive rebound.

For good measure, Beyer dropped in her fifth three of the half with ten seconds remaining that increased the lead to 13. The trey marked a new single-game career-high from beyond the arc for the junior.

E-town limited LVC to just seven points in the second quarter, the fewest the team has given up in a quarter this season. They outscored the Dutchmen 22-7 in the second to take a 41-28 advantage into the half.

Ruth's and-one with 4:21 left in the third quarter had E-town up by 23, its largest lead of the game.

The Dutchmen chipped away and got within as few as nine points, with 5:07 to go in the fourth. Despite the slight lull in offense, E-town picked it right back up, as if with a simple flick of the switch, and took the lead right back to 15. Ruth, Emlet, and Lawson all recorded baskets down low, twice assisted by Hoesman.

Emma Powell scored her first career bucket after splitting a pair of foul shots over the weekend at Franklin & Marshall. Liz Hoffman got her first career points as well with a layup late in the game, assisted by Lauryn Mitchell.

Elizabethtown shot 48.3 percent from the floor, its best shooting night since a 48.1 percent effort last season against Moravian. E-town also shot 40 percent from the three-point line and 70 percent (14-for-20) from the foul line.

Beyer all scorers with 22, while Lawson had 18 and Ruth added 16. Caroline Scarff had a team-high 14 for Lebanon Valley. Venezia added ten for the Dutchmen.

The women's basketball team will play its first home game of the season on Wednesday, November 29 at 7 p.m. when the Blue Jays welcome Eastern to Thompson Gymnasium.
