Hoesman named All-Tournament, F&M beats E-town to recapture title

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team got off to a slow start and Franklin & Marshall capitalized in the first half to get out to a double digit lead and hang on for a 70-62 win. The Diplomats reclaimed the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament from E-town after the Blue Jays beat Lycoming a year ago in the championship game. Four players were in double figures for the Jays, including Emma Hoesman, who was named to the all-tournament team.

Elizabethtown (1-2) struggled with some first-quarter shooting woes at the offensive end, going just 1-for-9 in the quarter while Franklin & Marshall (2-0) shot nearly 50 percent (7-for-15). The Blue Jays trailed 18-11 after one thanks to nine made foul shots, though there were opportunities for more. EC had 14 free throws in the first quarter alone.

The second quarter was slightly improved, but the host Diplomats outscored E-town by seven for a second consecutive quarter and took at 14-point lead into halftime. Once again, Elizabethtown used points from the charity stripe to stay within reach. All three field goals in the second stanza for the Jays were all three-pointers, coming from Lydia Lawson, Marissa Emlet, and Rachel Liszkiewicz.

E-town finished the half just 4-for-22 from the floor, while shooting 13-for-22 from the foul line. Mikayla Ruth was 4-of-6 and Liszkiewicz made 6-of-8 foul shot attempts.

Ashley Reynolds, who tied for a team-high with a season-best 12 points, started Elizabethtown off right in the third quarter with an offensive rebound and put back on the opening possession. Ruth pulled down the rebound on the other end and Abby Beyer got inside for a lay-in for four quick points from the Jays that got F&M's lead down to 10.

Franklin & Marshall's lead got up to as many as 13 in the third, and no closer than nine for most of the third, through Beyer's fast break bucket brought the Jays within seven with 1:12 left in the third. The Dips got the lead back up to 11 by the end of the quarter.

Tournament MVP Haley Pilone drilled a three to open the fourth to stack the odds against Elizabethtown, who fought hard to make the comeback happen.

Pilone got three points the unconventional way, with a basket inside plus the foul and free throw that got the Diplomats back up 13. Hoesman connected on four straight points that cut the deficit to eight, but F&M always had the answer.

There was no quit in EC. Down ten, Reynolds hit two consecutive high percentage shots inside on back-to-back possessions and suddenly it was only a six-point game with 3:18 left in regulation.

The defense held Franklin & Marshall scoreless over a two-minute span late, and Beyer took an outlet pass down court from Hoesman on the break and surged to the hoop untouched to get E-town within four, 62-58.

Now in foul trouble, the lead grew back to eight as F&M hit four straight foul shots in the last two minutes. Elizabethtown would get no closer than eight the remaining 1:22 and the Diplomats snapped a three-game losing streak to the Blue Jays to recapture their tournament title.

Reynolds and Ruth both had 12 for the Jays, while Hoesman and Liszkiewicz each added ten points. Beyer was one shy of double digits with nine. Five different players connected from long range and E-town shot 21-for-34 from the foul line in the loss.

The women's basketball team will play one more on the road before the home opener next week. Elizabethtown faces Lebanon Valley in Annville, Pa. on Tuesday, November 22 at 5 p.m.
