Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Five in double figures as Blue Jays down Stevens

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team got out in front early and maintained its lead throughout the entirety of its 72-63 win in the first game of Franklin & Marshall's Terry Greene Memorial Tournament. Five Blue Jays were in double figures in the win.

Stevens (0-2) went ahead on two free throws by Megan Brown, but Marissa Emlet immediately tied the game up 12 seconds later and Abby Beyer's three-pointer put Elizabethtown (1-1) ahead, which the Jays would hold onto for the remaining three quarters.

The Blue Jays went on a 7-0 run to pull ahead 12-4, in large part to Ashley Reynolds' five points off the bench. The freshman was fouled, but made her layup attempt and sank the ensuing free throw, which put E-town up eight. Emma Hoesman found Reynolds for the lay-in.

Emlet and Reynolds themselves combined for ten points in the quarter and outscored the Ducks 10-8. Elizabethtown led 18-8 after one quarter of play.

Veronica Christ put up nine of her 11 points in the second quarter, accounting for nine of the 16 second-quarter points for the Jays. She had four of the first six points in the quarter and EC went on a 7-0 run to open the second to take a commanding 25-8 lead.

E-town was also defending well. Stevens was only able to make two of its first 25 field goals in the game while the Blue Jays started off hot (10-for-18).

Christ hit on her only three-point attempt of the game with 1:45 left in the first half that put Elizabethtown up 34-20. The Ducks scored the final six points of the quarter and cut the deficit to single digits by halftime, 34-26.

Coming out of the locker room, the Jays struggled with their shots in the third. Stevens held EC to just 4-for-15 in the quarter. Though the shot attempts were going in, Elizabethtown produced at the foul line with a 5-for-7 mark in the third. Mikayla Ruth went 4-for-6 and led the team with six third-quarter points.

Beyer got going in the fourth quarter, dropping ten points including two treys. Ruth, Lydia Lawson, and Reynolds each hit on their only field goal attempts, Emma Hoesman was 1-for-2, and Beyer shot 3-for-5 with two threes and a pair of free throws.

Beyer hit a three to begin the fourth quarter after Stevens had the lead down to six by the end of the third. She then hit two of her three foul shots after being fouled in the act of shooting behind the arc. Beyer had six of the first eight points in the quarter for the Jays.

Up 60-47 with less than six minutes to go, Megan Anderson hit back-to-back threes for the Ducks that brought Stevens back within seven. Sam Winter cut it to four with a three of her own as the Ducks were on a 9-0 run. Lawson halted it with a made jumper.

Hoesman gave the Blue Jays some breathing room with just under two minutes left. She came up with a steal and went down the court for the fast break layup to make it an eight-point lead. Winter made it a six-point game with 32 seconds left, but Hoesman hit three free throws down the stretch to preserve Elizabethtown's victory.

Beyer finished with a team-high 13 points. Ruth, Lawson, and Christ each had 11 and Reynolds was the fifth member in double figures, with ten. Ruth pulled down a team-best eight rebounds, while Reynolds had six. Hoesman finished with six assists.

E-town also had the advantage in foul shooting, with 32 attempts in the game compared to just 12 for Stevens. Bench points were 25-12 in favor of the Blue Jays.

The women's basketball team will face host Franklin & Marshall in the championship game tomorrow at 3 p.m.
