Men's basketball worn down by Wilkes

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- A 24-6 run over the first seven minutes of the second half turned a back-and-forth game into a Wilkes runaway Saturday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays, led by 15 points from Ethan DuBois and Michael Pastore, dropped their home opener, 86-75.

Pastore displayed confidence in his game once again, shooting and slashing his way to the rim for nine of his career-high 15 points in a first half that saw four lead changes. The junior from Williamsport has recorded new career scoring highs in each of his first two games.

Elizabethtown (0-2) got a wide range of contributions in the first. Connor Moffatt made all three shots he took, including two straight from 3-point land, for eight points. DuBois had seven and Bryce Greene six as eight different Blue Jays found their way onto the scoresheet.

Josh Christ's only basket of the first half gave the Blue and Gray a 27-21 edge --its largest of the game-- with 7:21 to go, but momentum quickly swung back to the visitors. Tommy Bowen and Mark Mullins each scored four points in a 12-0 run that gave the Colonels (2-0) a lead they would not relinquish.

Both squads shot 50% in the period, with E-town connecting on 17 of 34 attempts and Wilkes 14 of 28. The Colonels were able to attack the Blue Jays' interior early and create foul issues for the hosts. Wilkes turned that foul trouble into 15 free throws before the break and made 11 to take a 41-38 lead to the locker room.

Moffatt knocked down a pair of freebies in the opening minute of the second half to pull the Jays within 41-40, but it was as close as they would get. Rob Pecorelli started Wilkes' game-changing 24-6 run with a 3-pointer and accounted for seven points in the run. Mullins added six and Zach Brunner four as the Colonels opened up a 65-46 lead with 13:01 to play.

The Blue Jays would not cut Wilkes' lead to less than 10 the rest of the way.

Bowen's double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds paced Wilkes. Brunner had a game-high 18 points and Mullins 16 as five Colonels finished in double figures. Wilkes shot 53.7% for the game (29 of 54), made 22 of 33 at the charity stripe and owned a 42-31 advantage on the glass.

DuBois and Pastore each shot 6 of 13 from the floor to lead E-town in scoring with 15 points. Moffatt (13) and Greene (11) gave the Blue Jays four players in double figures. Moffatt also had six rebounds, along with team-highs of four assists and four steals. Matt Thomas had seven points and six boards and Brandon Berry six points.

Elizabethtown will head into the Thanksgiving holiday with a road matchup at Lebanon Valley Tuesday evening at 7:30.
