Stevenson holds off Blue Jays 90-87 in overtime

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- All five Elizabethtown starters scored in double figures and the Blue Jays ended regulation on a 9-2 run to force overtime in its season opener Wednesday night at Stevenson. The Mustangs withstood another late push in the extra session to hold on, 90-87.

Bryce Greene went 4 of 5 from deep for 12 of his team-high 23 points in the first half. Michael Pastore and junior transfer Brandon Berry had 10 points each in the half as the Blue Jays (0-1) were scorching from beyond the arc, making 9 of 13 attempts (69.2%) to grab a 46-44 halftime lead.

Elizabethtown led nearly all of the first 16 minutes, going up by as many as nine points, 27-18, with 10:29 to go in the first half after back-to-back 3-pointers by Ethan DuBois and Berry.

Pastore connected from beyond the arc on each of the Jays' last two possessions of the half, offsetting treys from the Mustangs' Kyle Wooldridge and Danzel Wright to give E-town a two-point edge at the break.

The second half was just as closely contested. Neither team led by more than four points until Stevenson (1-0) threatened to pull away with less than four minutes to play. Marcus Dentley knocked down a jumper and Wright hit a three to put the Mustangs up seven, 72-65, at the 3:44 mark.

E-town scored the final six points of regulation, tying the game at 75 on a Moffatt layup with 25 seconds left. Stevenson had a shot to win it, but Dentley came up dry on a triple at the buzzer.

Another seven-point deficit in OT was too much for Elizabethtown to overcome in head coach Britt Moore's regular season debut.

The Blue Jays didn't go down without a fight. Trailing 89-82 with 32 seconds to go, Matt Thomas got behind the defense for a layup and Berry nailed another three to cut Stevenson's lead to two after Johnny Rhodes had missed the front end of a 1-and-1.

Jaylin Johnson converted the front end of the bonus on the Mustangs' next trip to the line, but without a timeout, E-town was forced to quickly get the ball up court following his miss on the second shot and Greene's heave to tie from the far left wing fell short.

Moore relied on a six-man rotation for much of the night and four starters played over 34 minutes. Greene made a career-high six 3-pointers on his way to a 23-point, six-rebound effort. The sophomore guard shot 8 of 19 overall and 6 of 11 from downtown.

Pastore recorded 14 points and eight assists in 39 minutes --all new career-highs. Thomas had career-highs of 13 points and nine rebounds and Moffatt posted his first double-double with a career-high 17 rebounds and 10 points. Moffatt's 17 boards were the most by a Blue Jay in nine seasons going back to 2009-10, when Mike Church pulled down 19 at Delaware Valley, Nov. 24, 2009.

Berry, who played his first two seasons at Washington College, equaled a career-high with 13 points and DuBois finished with 10.

Wright, a senior transfer from Division II Grand Valley State, netted a game-high 30 points in his first game as a Mustang. He was 11 of 21 from the floor with five 3-pointers.

Rhodes provided a double-double off the bench with 19 points and 10 boards, while Johnson added 12 points, seven rebounds and seven dimes, and Dentley scored 11 points for the hosts.

Elizabethtown opens its home schedule Saturday at 3 p.m. against Wilkes.
