Blue Jays provide scare in near upset of #3 Scranton

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- In a battle of two of the top 15 scoring defenses across NCAA Division III, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team came up one bucket short of pulling off the upset over No. 3 Scranton Saturday afternoon in Landmark Conference action. The Blue Jays were unable to get the game-winning basket on the final possession of the game and the Lady Royals held on for a 51-50 win. Emily Martin led the Jays with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Alexix Roman hurt Elizabethtown (10-2, 0-2 Landmark) early with a couple of offensive rebounds to keep possession in Scranton's (13-0, 2-0) favor. Roman had the first six points for the Lady Royals.

Abby Beyer connected on a three-pointer at the 3:11 mark of the first quarter to get E-town back within a point after trailing 8-4, but the Jays would go without a bucket the rest of the quarter and Scranton took a 13-7 lead into the second. Martin had the game's opening points with a layup as the teams tied twice, at 2-2 and 4-4, before the Royals held the advantage the remainder of the first.

Nikki Thompson, who would hit several key shots off the bench for the Blue Jays, had the second quarter's first points with a bucket off Mikayla Ruth's feed to make it 13-9. A few possessions later, Lydia Lawson's lay-in once again kept it at a four-point cushion for Scranton with a little over seven minutes in the half.

Katie Broderick kicked off 7-0 run for the Lady Royals with a made trey. Bridgette Mann also hit a three and Sarah Payonk split a pair of foul shots and Scranton doubled up E-town, 22-11, with 4:21 remaining in the second. Thompson knocked down a three of her own to cut the deficit back to single digits and Elizabethtown would outscore their guests 10-4 over the final four minutes to go into halftime down 26-21.

The Blue Jays began the third quarter on an 8-3 run and tied things up for the first time since it was 4-4 early in the first quarter. Beyer grabbed an offensive board on E-town's first possession of the third and drained another three (Ruth assist) to start the run. Martin canned two of her 14 second-half points to make it a two-point game and after Scranton hit one of two at the line, Ruth was fouled on a three-point try and knocked down all three ensuing free throws to make it 29-29.

From that point, neither team led by more than three points, which made every possession at both ends critical. Martin and Lawson combined to score the final ten points of the third quarter for the Blue Jays and the game went tied into the fourth at 39 all.

Martin knotted up the game for the ninth time at 41-41 with two made foul shots, but on the Royals' next possession it came down to the very last second on the shot clock. Mackenzie Yori was able to get a shot away and banked home a three as the clock expired and Scranton led by three, the biggest lead either team would have in the final ten minutes.

Elizabethtown trailed by two points until Thompson drained her second trey of the afternoon with 4:58 to go in the game, a big shot, as it put E-town ahead for the first time since leading 2-0.

Roman put the Lady Royals back ahead, but Martin returned the lead over to the Jays. Mann then missed a layup and EC was back down the court on the fast break. Lawson, who grabbed the board on Mann's miss, dished to Ruth for the layup and suddenly Elizabethtown had its largest lead of the contest at 50-47 with 2:55 left in regulation.

Payonk's layup coupled with an E-town turnover gave the Royals a chance to take back the lead. Roman would make one of two foul shots and the game went into the final minute locked at 50-50.

Mann was fouled with 23 ticks left on the clock and had a chance to win it for Scranton. She made the first, but her second bounced off the rim and into the hands of Ruth and the Jays called timeout to set up for a potential game-winner on the final possession.

Beyer let go a jumper on the right baseline with a few seconds left, but the ball pinged around on the rim and out, and Payonk grabbed the defensive board to prevent any kind of put-back attempt for E-town as time expired.

The teams were nearly identical in their shooting. Scranton made one more field goal (19 to 18) while E-town shot better at the foul line (10-12) than the Lady Royals (9-16). Both teams hit four three-pointers.

Martin's 18 were a game-high. Beyer added nine, and Lawson and Thompson each contributed eight in the loss. Payonk had 15 for Scranton while Roman had 14.

The women's basketball team will look for its first league win of the season on Wednesday, January 11 at 7 p.m. when they host Catholic at Thompson Gymnasium.
